. . .
Oftentimes a woman interprets sexy to be the most body-conscious of little dresses, or the lowest of v-necks that display her cleavage to the best of her advantage. If she should feel confident in it, if it should be a garment which makes her hold her head a little higher, strut with hips swaying without a care in the world, then that is defined as sexy. But if she should feel out of place, exposed, or vulnerable, then she has misinterpreted sexuality. Sexuality lies not in the degree of body-conscious apparel or the length of one’s skirt. Nor is it dressing to appeal to the animalistic qualities of men, or to rouse envy in women.
Embracing sexuality is finding oneself, and one’s unabashedness in being herself.
And being sexy need not be limited to lacy little numbers or bandage dresses à la Hervé Leger. As much as I love the aforementioned two, from hip-hugging LBDs to bandage skirts and little tailored shorts, they are not the only way of achieving sensuality. Touches of androgyny are equally provocative—if not more so. Unconventional, yes, but the mysterious effects of a man’s shirt worn over a lace black bra, or Doc Martens worn with knit skirts cannot be denied. It is the je-ne-sais-quoi element from that nonchalant way of throwing a sheer button-up, oversized and wrinkled, over denim or leggings that holds such a strong appeal. A taste of sensuality as practiced by the French femmes (or so we Americans think): sexiness is not truly achieved unless there is a balance between masculinity and femininity.
Pair a bandage skirt with some sort of combat, utility boot. A not-quite-opaque, oversized button-up over a bandeau bra, and over-the-knee socks for that British school-girl-gone-bad appeal. Add a loosely tied tie if feeling adventurous. Finding one’s definition of sexy requires exploration of what feels right. So that immediately upon walking out the door, heads turn because the bystanders sense a feeling of being at peace with oneself, and being wholly confident. Regardless of what is worn that particular day.

10 Honest Things
A great thank you to the ever lovely Miss Neira for tagging me; herein I shall list ten [10] honest things about myself. The rules are but the usual: When accepting this auspicious award, you must write a post bragging about it, linking back to whoever tagged you. List at least ten honest things about yourself, then pass on the love!
- I have a predilection for men (michsteng will understand quite well), as they are far more sophisticated and mature. But I do have a weakness for boys who can dance. And sing like Michael Bublé. Perhaps that explains my predicament as a single—I am quite the fastidious one with equally high standards when choosing.
- I find photographers and scruffy, artsy boys who dress rather well quite attractive. Sexy, even, and I am hardly abashed about admitting such a thing. Creativity is what ultimately draws me in; originality, spontaneity, and an artistic eye are qualities which are charming. I love seeing how others see; it is a unique opinion, not one of conformity, that is appreciated. The archetypal boy of the aforementioned sort holds that adventurous mystery that lures me to unravel; yet the majority of the time I can only stand several metres behind, watching him photograph, in the littlest hopes of understanding him.
- Only on rare occasions are my nails sans polish. It has become quite the odd habit of mine, for better or for worse. I find naked nails to be, well, naked. And drab. A bit of color adds personality, interest, and can make for quite the interesting conversation starter. Case in point? Many boys have brought up my neon-pink nails in the attempt to make small talk. And it has worked.
- I prefer watching movies at home over a trip to the cinemas. Curling upon a couch in pajamas with a seemingly bottomless bowl of homemade popcorn is far more comfortable than those theater chairs.
- I have watched The Devil Wears Prada more times than countable by my cocktail ring clad fingers. If asked, I more than likely will have had every line memorized, Miranda Priestly’s impossible demands inclusive. The reason for re-watching it so many times lies in this childish dream of mine to become some notorious fashion editor’s assistant. I would hardly mind succumbing to ridiculous orders and running out for coffee if I can be submerged in the offices of a beautiful magazine and in the closets that hold millions dollars worth of covetable designer items. Le sigh.
- The smell of both new and old books will never cease to entice me; the scent is inimitable, musky and mysterious, yet all the while familiar. It begs of you to open its cover, to turn its pages, to submerge yourself within the text.
- I love stationery—and buying them, come the bustling school supply shopping season (ah, alliteration). New notebooks, with their fresh pages, simply call for writing upon it—a few notes, a scribble, a doodle, a story. From a blank page comes the birth of a new idea. It is quite amazing how a blank page can inspire.
- My choice of writing utensil is always a black ball-point pen. Black, for its sophistication and class. And ball-point because its ink is never messy like the fancier inky fountain pens.
- I find myself staring at the sky—particularly in the evening. Perhaps I am a dreamer, fantasizing about what the night beholds and what universes lie beyond that inky darkness; but what I do know is that the night sky is one of the most beautiful things bestowed upon us by some higher being. The sky is never simply navy, or midnight blue, or black. Instead, it is a variation of the darkest hues, swirled together with a sprinkling of shimmering stars. Plums, blues, greys, obsidian, slate blues—hues that are painted across the sky in watercolors. I’ve always imagined what it would be like to transpose a bit of the evening sky onto a gown—it would be the most breathtaking, in a soft ombre-like procession of blended shades, with hints of Swarovski crystals in mesmerizing patterns.
- It continues to utterly amaze and perplex me to see the number of people who actually take the time to visit my blog habitually and comment here. I am thoroughly humbled by everything that has happened to me thus far because of my blog. So thank you, thank you, and thank you over and over again!
Now you lovely readers—do share an honest fact or two! I should love to learn more about you!
bisous,

Great blog!
This post was especially interesting, cse small things can tell you a lot about a person.
Hmmm… let me think… about me…
I love fashion and style.. but can be so lazy… that very often I´ll prefer my old baggy pants to a nice outfit.. and I´ll put my old flat warm shoes on… while my beatiful lovely pairs will stay at home. Still can´t stop buying beatiful shoes.. love them!
hmmm.. hope it was interesting…
And I´ll add you to my blogroll, cse .. I simply need a fashion reminder..
🙂
Cafe Fashionista says
Once again, I can’t believe how scary the amount of things we have in common is. Honestly, I feel as if I wrote this myself.
Here’s another honest thing:
I believe that showing off a little shoulder, as in via an off-the-shoulder top, is so much sexier than blatantly displaying cleavage or a lot of leg. It’s seductive in a casual, carefree, bohemian way. 🙂
zombielace says
You write SO beautifully– I always knew you were a good writer from reading your blog, but this is the first time I’ve read anything so lyrical and full of images. I also like your take on sexiness, I agree so much!
La Couturier says
zombielace: Thank you! This was seriously the sweetest of comments I’ve ever received (:
Cafe Fashionista: Oh my goodness. We are ridiculously similar; I prefer showing shoulder over anything else – nearly everything in my wardrobe is off the shoulder!!
bisous!
Jessica says
I couldn’t agree more about your views on sex appeal. I hope lots of people read this and discover their own interpretations of sex appeal. It usually just takes a fabulous pair of shoes for me.
Unfortunately I don’t have an honest thing to share with you, because quite frankly I’m not that interesting—haha! Although you have inspired me to pay more attention to the sky at night!

What a great list of tidbits about yourself.
Rachel says
Your writing is spectacular–so sophisticated. I have to agree with the watching of movies in the comfort of one’s own home (and the supply of one’s own popcorn, as you pointed out). Also, I agree with #5. The Devil Wears Prada is such an amazing movie. Not really about the plot, but about the clothes and the atmosphere of the fashion world. (And the part when you get to see a peek into their fashion closet–Oh My!!!)
I guess it’s time for me to share a truth.
I have an addiction to designer jeans. However, I’ve learned to cope. I still buy all of my wonderful denim, but I’ve learned to buy on ebay (with ultimate precaution of fraud and fakes). True Religion, Seven For All Mankind, Joe’s Brand, Rich&Skinny, Rag&Bone, Ralph Lauren (the list goes on) all available within reach and price range. So I’m not sure if this was a truth or a tip. It started out as a truth, though. 😀

We share 6, 7, and 8. In fact, when my boyfriend (an artist/photographer who dresses well, aherm) and I first started dating, he found it weird that I’d smell a book in the bookstore before I read the synopsis. 😀
Tamara says
“Bottomless bowl of popcorn” is one of my dreams come true ;)And black ball-point pen is a must in my bag!
Rosie says
I so agree about the sexy thing!
Anyways, a truth: I sometimes buy a pair of jeans that are just slightly too big at thrift stores, so that on days when I am just running around the house, I have a pair of jeans that reminds me that I am a perfectly healthy weight, and that are easy to move in.

It was nice to get to know you better!
I love that look….not too sexy…a great combo!
Rebekka says
Lovely post. Great list of things about yourself. You write them so well, go beyond the drab of simple sentences.
Annnd thanks for writing the amazing part on what it truly is to be sexy. I find myself stumped many a times trying to figure our what’s sexy without looking like I belong in the Red Light District by going out a lot during day time. Your posts just have so much wisdom and I love reading your blog.
I find myself stumped with w/e problem I am going through. I’m kind of going through a self-evaluation process and find myself confused by the whole ordeal. I might just delete the whole post due to hassle. I tend to over think things way to much and blowing them into Macy’s day parade-sized proportions.

Fabulous post! Sensuality is a very subjective topic and yet, we frequently allow the general comments of society to define this intimate concept for us. Unfortunately, society falls short in accurately identifying what constitutes as sensual. I will never forget when a friend of mine mentioned that he found women to be more attractive when she wore blue jeans and a t-shirt then when she got dressed-up in a slinky black dress and heels. He commented that when a woman is in her jeans and t-shirt she allows her real personality to shine…of which he is the most attracted to!

I simply love this editorial! Natalia’s perfect for any expression. I also prefer watching movies at home too and I do wish I can be some famous fashion editor’s assistant one day! If I have to share some honest about myself, I would have to say I’m completly addicted to body lotion and sunscreen and also I dislike sitting on hard-surfaced chairs. I must have a comfortable cushy place to sit whenever I am or I’d rather stand.
Ingrid says
I love Natalia’s editorial, she looks gorgeous.
And I must agree with you, being sexy is more of an attitude than the way you dress, only when you feel sexy you transmit being sexy. Is a secret that not everybody knows
Romeika says
Natalia V just looks amazing no matter what..God, I hate her! haha

Another brilliant post, and I totally agree with you on ‘androgynous sexuality’! 🙂 I recently read a great article on Elle UK on it too…
Hm…an honest fact…My comfiest lounging outfit includes harem pants and long ugg-boots (and a cashmere sweater), my hubby calls me a swashbuckling turkish buccaneer, but it must be the ultimate in comfort, haha! 🙂

Regarding unconventional sexiness, I agree.

Why do you wish of only being an assistant? Heck, dream of

Your ability to write keeps me reading and the great eye candy you post keeps me commenting 😉
Umm, and an honest fact? I don’t think I have style yet, a personal style I mean. Always searching though!

Christine: Only for the time being, of course (; Mm, to be the next Miranda Priestly would be amazing. I’d be far nicer, of course! (; And thank you darling!

didi: Charlotte Gainsbourg & CAtherine Deneuve are two of my inspirations (:
Jess: I have indeed! (: Thank you so much, I should hope I can be one some day!

So good. I’d agree a “French-style” sensuality is something to be aspired to … like actresses Charlotte Gainsbourg, Audrey Tautou, Sophie Marceau, Julie Delpy, Juliette Binoche, Catherine Deneuve, and many others. So classy and yet amazing. I still haven’t figured out how to emulate the essence of what makes them so wonderful.
michtseng says
ridiculously sexy editorial. now how to take that and turn it into everyday wear that is socially acceptable for work and the mother? hahah
i really enjoyed reading about your 10, or anything about you. you’re so amazing, i really can’t get over it.

such a fantastic post, as usual!

Fabulous post! I completely agree with your take on being sexy. I also love the Devil Wears Prada, no matter how many times I watch it, it will never get old. I also love artistic boys, they are so mysterious. I really enjoyed reading your ten, they were all very interesting.
Alright, something honest about me.. I’ve never been so unsure about my future before, as I’ve never been a live in the moment type of girl. Ever since I was little I’ve planned to be an actress, but with the long, grueling hours I spend indoors acting in the summer heat, I’ve been questioning that career path. I guess I am torn between fashion and the theatre.
Couture Carrie says
Love this editorial, darling! You know my fondness for hosiery and lingerie!!
And your honest things are fantastic too, especially numbers 2 & 7!

Natalia is gorgeous, and definitely owns her look. She looks just as sexy in those Docs as she would in anything else!
thebaglady says
Another brilliantly written post – I’ve been missing your longer posts! (: Don’t get me wrong, I love EVERYTHING you post but these are my favorites. (Natalia looks beautiful!)
And your honest things – you are such an interesting girl, much different than most seventeen year olds! You should’nt be someone’s assistant – you need to be an EDITOR (:
And an honest thing or two…
– I usually end up buying whatever you blog about… (except the PEEK since I already am a Crackberry girl). You’re quite persuasive.
– I love eating peanut butter straight out of the jar.
anonymous says
(don’t worry i’m not that mean anonymous commenter from awhile back)
i never commented, but i finally did because i love what you wrote about sexiness. it’s so true – i had a phase where i tried so hard to be sexy by wearing skimpy little tanks & denim skirts from a&f but now i know better. it was partially maturing, and also (to be honest) reading your “how to be fabulous” post that kind of made me realize that what i wear shows who I am. and what i wore then showed the world i was insecure. so, after following your advice and taking ideas from your outfits you put together, i can proudly say that today i am trying to be fashionable & most importantly, trying to show who i am through what i wear. not dressign for boys’ attentions anymore.
so thank you so much.
Bonnie Klyde says
Honest Thing 1: I really love using visual art to inspire clothing. Klimt for 90’s florals, Matisse cutouts for graphic prints, georgia o’keefe for large florals, warhol for color blocking. I adore it.
Honest Thing 2: I love your new banner!
Thanks for the comment love!
-BK
La Couturier says
Bonnie Klyde: I do as well! Particularly watercolor prints, inspired by impressionists & Georgia O’Keefe (I love her floral artwork!)
anonymous: Your comment was perhaps one of the most touching I’ve yet received. Please don’t thank me; it was all you (:
thebaglady: Then you’ll like my latest post – it is quite the long one!! And haha, I never knew that! Perhaps I shouldn’t be as persuasive, then? (;
Alize Morand says
I love this post, it’s insane. Your writing is getting better and better, I cannot wait for you to be the editor of this amazing fashion magazine I’ll be working with across the ocean! 🙂
Strange facts about myself then:
-As feminine as I am, my favourite colour, ever, is navy blue. Just like the beautiful deep sky you described.
-I only wear skirts and dresses. I don’t own a pair of jeans.
-I have never, ever smoked – impossible thing for a French woman!
-I love old classic, black & white, films. In my sofa indeed! 🙂
-I am obsessed with tea. Especially white tea.
Plein de bisous!
La Couturier says
Alize: Thank you so much darling – coming from you, my Parisian alter ego from overseas, it means so much!
– I love navy blue – particularly in fitted little dresses!
– I am determined I need more dresses & skirts – I’m quite the denim girl (; Skinnies & wide leg trousers, galore!
– Impossible indeed. I am so proud of you!! I’m very much against smoking.
– Same same same! (:
– Tea is love (: But I do love coffee more, I must admit!
kristine says
this is such a gorgeous ed! & you are so right about dressing sexy vs feeling sexy!

She looks great! I wish I looked good in Doc Martens.
Marta says
I think that sexy has nothing to do with how a person dressed, but rather with their view of themselves. An individual who is comfortable in their skin and has confidence to be themselves is always sexy.
P.S. I love the smell of books 🙂 I’m a book nerd !
La Couturier says
Marta: I am too! (: I love, love, love reading!
The Fashion Inquisitor says
I use to absolutely love the smell of old books =]
I love how you say women often interpret sexy as very revealing and tight or revealing clothing. I believe there are a billion things that make women “sexy” outside of her figure and how she dresses. But its true looks are always your first impression.
Oh and btw I love The Devil Wears Prada
Tom Tuttle from Tacoma says
nice to get to know you!
if we’re to be guided by first impressions, for me, sexy is the elegant woman who wears masculine shoes (not doc martens :P) or the girl in geeky glasses, just to name a couple.
i’m a closet groupie.. yes i think it’s their gift of being creative that’s lethal.
miriam says
les photos de natalia sont super belles! and i adored reading about your ten honest things. bisous
Macaron Treat ♥♥ says
I completely agree with you on the sexy topic. When you see a woman wearing an uncomfortably short skirt or shorts (which she is not comfortable in) and hobbles along in heels, It is deff not sexy!
I also prefer men. Not boys, I find boys my age quite horrid. The exception is for only a few. Men that are mature, educated and traveled and sophisticated get me everytime!
xx
Kellie Collis says
Natalia is stunning!
Sexy is how you feel, never can be forced otherwise it is transparent! x
Charlotte says
I can totally find myself in your opinion about books. Since I was little I am dreaming about an library in my own house, with big cabinets and a little stepladder. And of course books! A lot of them. Nice post :)!
roxanne says
i watched the devil wears prada last weekend for the same exact reason! i was thinking to myself that it might do me well to watch it regularly, too.. and i also love love love the smell of new and old books. i once dragged a friend into an east village hole in the wall bookshop on a whim and had to refrain from flipping out on her because she absolutely insisted on knocking the smell of it, even though it was the absolute best part of the whole experience. two more things we have in common, i suppose, aside from our deep love for fashion and writing of course!
savvymode says
sexiness is an attitude not how much skin a gal can expose. a gal pal thinks low cut and miniskirt are what is sexy but she is not. rather she just looks as if she is trying too hard.
dapper kid says
That cover shot is so unbelievably stunning! I always try to make the distinction between ‘looking’ sexy and ‘feeling’ sexy. Too many fall into the trap of the former, without realising that they actually seek the latter. You have to feel confident and good within your own skin, and that lets you feel amazing and sexy in whatever you choose to put on.
Definitely a fan of watching movies at home. I like going to the cinema, but I can never get quite comfortable enough, I’d much rather turn the lights out and watch in the silence and comfort of home with some friends or family. And I absolutely love the smell of books, especially old ones. That musty smell always make me feel like an explorer, as if I am about to read some long lost treasure. Haha, and glad I’m not the only one who enjoys shopping for stationery, I always get excited when the time comes for new pens and notepads. Oh, and I hate writing with blue biros, it always feels cheap – black all the way!
Hope you’re having a beautiful weekend dear 🙂
La Couturier says
dapper kid: I just wish girls would understand that confidence exudes sexiness effortlessly! And we are so alike! I find that blue pens feel cheap as well – hurrah for black ink!
roxanne: Yes! Another two things we have in common (:
bisous!
miranda says
oh hon
i just read this entry and the previous one
and i adore you, so much hahaha
as a new yorker, i’m flattered by what you said hahaha and i totally agree with ny-ers being really “put together”
i find myself feeling like that. at times it’s unbelievably annoying because i feel a NEED to know EXACTLY what i’m wearing and it has to be JUST RIGHT
you know?
oy.
in any case,
totally agreeing with this post as well
but that brings me to another question
we’re always talking about women being sexy
but personally, i would never consider myself to be “sexy”
pretty, sometimes, cute, more of the time, glam, maybe
but never “sexy”
perhaps it’s not in my personality
but if not “sexy” what is it?
on a totally different note, i really have to express how much i admire you!
you’re such a wonderful writer and i always love your entries
i will not be surprised if you write for vogue one day
xoxo
La Couturier says
miranda: Aww thank you so, so much love! I think sexy differs for everyone; for you I think it is that confidence that attracts people – guys & girls alike – to you. For others it is a bit of confidence mixed with sensuality that also causes attraction, but moreso for the opposite sex.
And you are so sweet! Thank you! I should hope that I will become good enough for that some day…
bisous!
S.Elisabeth says
Love this post. I love the concept of sexy because it’s so different for everyone and it’s ALWAYS changing.
Blahh and I know what you mean about liking men but also cute boys. It’s terrible predicament.

Just a little note: the repetition of the letter ‘s’ or the ‘s’ sound is referred to as assonance, alliteration is the general term used for repetition of any other consonant withing a phrase. Keep up the good work, your blog is fantastic 😉
