Nothing screams glamorous for the holidays more than sequins. Truly the epitome of all things of stardom potential and attention-grabbers, sequin-fied dresses, tops, skirts, and what have you are essentials for the holiday seasons. At first glance upon the store rack, sequined apparel is daunting. With millions of questions flashing across your mind like What do I wear with it? I’ll look like a disco ball! When can I wear it? etc., in sync with the little bits of shimmer catching the light, sequins do require, no doubt, a bit of courage and confidence. But the good thing is that they are actually quite simple to wear and easily integrated into any wardrobe from day to night.
The novellas continue…
. . .
Starry Nights
Abigail, Abigail, Abigail, her mother would sigh lovingly as she stroked the soft curls. Why must you be such a dreamer? The much-said lines ran through her head as she pulled out the diamond encrusted earrings out of the precious blue box. Abby traced the familiar star shape, re-reading the little note scribbled in the lid of the box: “To my precious Abigail, the dreamer who wishes upon shooting stars”. They felt warm as the earrings slipped in their position in her ear, dangling daintily, as if floating like actual stars in the sky, only in the sea of brown curls. Tonight, her wish was granted by the little angels on these shooting stars; after an entire year and a half, her pride and joy, her masterpiece, would have its first press release and book signing. And to celebrate the event, she would, of course, wear her favorite outfit. That included the navy sequined skirt that reminded her of the night sky; after all, she was the center of attention for tonight. The rest of the her outfit was kept simple; black opaque tights, leather ankle booties, a black blazer over a fitted white tank, and her new studded, patent leather clutch. Abigail accented the ensemble with bits of silver sparkle here and there; silver shadow on her lids, and a chunky D&G bracelet and the beloved earrings to serve as bits of stars against the dark blue sky.
Strictly Business
It took a lot of persuasion—begging, more like it—to convince Stella to part with her Mac Book for a night for a girl’s night out at the swankiest club in the city. And it took even more pleading to dissuade her from wearing her usual uniform of a blazer, button down, dress pants, and stilettos. But alas, when the taxicab honked impatiently, Stella and her friends were able to reach a compromise: she would be allowed to wear the blazer and pumps, so long as she dressed up a bit. Her clubbing outfit didn’t differ too much from her work ensemble, except the extra sparkle she added. She decided it was the perfect time to wear her new Calvin Klein tuxedo blazer with satin lapels; the smooth shine contrasted with the more ostentatious Donna Karan silver sequin tank. Dress pants were out of the question, so Stella opted for her skinny black jeans. She finished the outfit off with, of course, patent, pointed toe pumps and a YSL patent envelope clutch. In it she only brought the necessities—her beloved Blackberry in case an important email arrived, classic red lipstick, mascara, and a few business cards (just in case). For once, Stella let her hair down instead of the usual updo she pinned it in. As she stood in front of the mirror rolling the sleeves of the blazer up a bit, she was a bit shocked at how she looked when she wasn’t in her standard work uniform. Her friends felt the same, squealing and gushing in excitement as they pulled her into the cab. Stella simply smiled, putting on a quick coat of red lipstick.
Blue Satin
Natalie sat on her bed, admiring her newly, self-manicured nails coated with Chanel Blue Satin. She rarely used that prized bottle of lacquer, only whipping it out for special occasions. Tonight was one such exception: she had a VIP Backstage pass to Chris Brown’s sold out concert, so of course she had to look her best. Nat had taken the entire day to make sure everything went as planned; an hour and a half was laid out to straighten her long locks, another for her makeup routine, and thirty minutes to paint her nails. With an hour to spare before her friend came to pick her up, she analyzed every inch of her outfit in hopes of making it perfect. Nat wore her trusted J Brand skinnies that made her already mile long legs look even longer, especially when paired with patent ankle booties in a deep navy that matched perfectly with her sequined vest. She needed to stand out today, amongst other die hard Chris Brown fans—and she knew those sequins would do exactly that under the blazing stage lights. Today, she couldn’t be shy or just stand in the back of the crowd just glimpsing at her idol crush from afar. Nat was determined to take more than a few pictures and get an autograph from the singer as she double checked the battery life of her camera.
Royal Nights
Lena. The artsy, sexy girl that caught the eye of every young man she passed on the street. Unlike most girls, however, she was highly unaware of how attractive she was; she knew she was pretty, but didn’t know of her abilities turn heads when she entered a room. Tonight was her first ever to go to clubbing; her friends insisted that she needed to go, as celebration that finals were, well, finally over and done with before the next semester. Lena agreed a bit hesitantly only because she could not think of a single item to wear. That was, until she found the lovely, deep purple slip dress bedecked with sequins. The amount of skin it revealed alarmed the girl; immediately, she reached for her J. Crew cardigan that covered just enough; the long length also hit right at the hemline of the dress—it was perfect. Lena added the finishing touches: a Tiffany & Co. necklace with a bow pendant from her grandmother, a dainty silver ring from her mother, and sky-high heels. She almost laughed at herself when she finally saw her potential to be alluring. But something was missing; Lena scratched her head in thought. Her cashmere beanie, of course! She wore it everywhere—that, a spritz of Flowerbomb, and her favorite Chanel bag in leather. She left the dorms, only to catch eyes with a few boys staring agape in disbelief. Lena only chuckled.

so inspiring stories of the night. Funny, I’m going to a concert tomorrow night and would love to dress up..but..its cold, icy, I hopefully won’t slip and slide my way there. And well, its a small venue with the regular slacker fare. Which means, guys drinking beer, a bad sound system, moshing…and it’ll be a sweat lodge…all for a hometown band call Faint, those boys who are the better half of Bright Eyes. Yeah, we love Conor but he has a thing for making out with just about anyone. So, time for me to get out those army boots, my leggins and my Bright Eyes T-shirt and good warm floppy beret.
Oh, and thanks so much for the comment. Yeah, I do love TV, I’m afraid. And dramas are seriously in trouble with the ratings lately so I dream of my own.
Thanks so much for reading.

I love sequins but I must admit that I’m a little too shy to wear them, but after your post, it seems less daunting! I’m going to a party tonight and even though I don’t have sequins I’m going for my very high heels, that I’m almost too afraid of using xD
I love your stories, they are very inspiring!<333

You know, when I read these novellas, I scan through the outfits first before going back again and reading the characters. What really amazes me is that after picking out my fav outfit, I find that the character is also the one I can most identify with!
Today’s pick is Lena. Unassuming but most definitely not clueless. I like that! And her dress is such a pretty colour. And the slouch of that Chanel… paired with a beanie! Perfection. I’d better grab this name before Hui does.. hahaha. It really is a pretty one ♥
Gushing as always,
‘Lena’

i simply adore these petite novellas! i’m a firm believer in the fact that there’s a story behind every piece and every outfit, so i love the fact that i’m not the only one. this time around, stella’s my favorite – probably because i’m all too familiar with adopting an unofficial uniform of black pants, black shoes, black accessories..

The first outfit stole my heart; that blue sequined skirt is gorgeous! I too love sequins, but actually a co-worker of mine dissed them saying that they look like cheap pieces of glued on plastic up close. I was so shocked! Like yeah they are plastic, but they are not just glued on! And it looks fantastic close up as well as faraway I thought.

Sequins and diamonds are two of my favourite things. The weird thing is that I only own one sequinned item (something as boring as a belt), even though I desperately want a 20’s style dress decorated with sequins. Perhaps I’ll just have to make one. Real diamonds are simply a fantasy, being a student and all, but I must say that these posts of yours are an excellent substitute! And I’d love to read that magazine, by the way – drop a word when it’s available for us mortals? Have a lovely day, darling!
Michelle says
swankiest.
i love the first outfit. absolutely adore it.
for the second…if i had the legs to pull it off, i’d probably opt for a dress that was the same style as the top and go with the blazer, no bottoms. though underwear, yes, because i’d probably just find going completely commando uncomfortable. i can tell stella’s not that kind of lady though, willing to show off, but not show all!
i thought i’d like to throw in that i’m wearing a beautiful jewel encrusted cocktail right now as i type this.
