Like most women with a Netflix subscription, I binge-watched “Bridgerton” in all of two days. How could I resist? Pride and Prejudice had been my favorite book for over a decade (and to this day, the only romantic plot I subscribe to), and period pieces set in the 18th or 19th centuries are my guilty pleasures. “Bridgerton” combined the two and delivered eight episodes starring strong female leads in a backdrop of utter decadence. It was high society Regency Era grandeur at its finest (Shonda-fied with salaciousness, of course)—replete with delicious costuming. Suddenly I wanted nothing but square necklines and corseted, empire-waisted gowns. A shortening of the hemline and any of the dresses could appear down a Dior or Miu Miu runway, and if I had the funds, I would wear them in a heartbeat. No occasion necessary, except to read at home, leisurely. (There certainly aren’t any callers to receive, much less balls happening in this climate.)
I’d be remiss not to mention the makeup, too. Fresh, pretty, angelic, and above all simple—and therefore the perfect inspiration for WFH Zoom meetings or a quick, pick-me-up routine to wear at home.
Here’s the minimalist’s (or lazy girl’s) guide on recreating the Bridgerton makeup look, effortlessly:
Embryolisse Radiant Eye
This cooling eye stick is a makeup artist’s staple for good reason. A swipe under the eyes and on the lids instantly softens, smooths, and de-puffs—so if you’re plagued with insomnia and left fumbling about the kitchen for a glass of warmed (soy) milk to soothe your nerves, none would be the wiser come morning.
Thank You Farmer Sun Project Shimmer Sun Essence SPF 30
True, the Bridgerton girls favored a matte look, but nearly a year spent indoors (or in an office) has left my skin looking lackluster—and on tired days, sallow. The pink, pearlescent finish of Thank You Farmer’s 3-in-1 multitasker gives tired complexions the lift, perfection, and protection needed. A lady must have her SPF (and not just her parasol) for all the promenading.
Glossier Lash Slick Mascara
It comes as no surprise that Glossier Lash Slick is on the list. True, I’m on my fourth tube of the film-form mascara (it’s currently the only mascara in my collection, too), but to achieve a natural yet lengthened lashes, Lash Slick is it.
Moonshot Youthful Coral Tintfit Shine
Applying Moonshot’s Tintfit Shine with the doefoot applicator gives a juicy finish. To use it as a hydrating lip stain, tap the tiniest bit onto unlined lips. You get the cushion-y moisturization and touch of pigment sans glossiness. Plus, it wears down beautifully throughout the day. No touch-ups are necessary between high tea and afternoon tea.
Glossier Storm Cloud Paint
Seamless, dreamy, and just the right amount to feign a healthy flush of a romance. Storm is a warm rose with a hint of berry, making it universally flattering no matter your undertones. Now, instead of applying it to the apples of your cheeks, try blending it from the center point outwards and upwards. Follow the angle of your cheekbones and diffuse it at your temples. Voilà: accentuated cheekbones à la Daphne Bridgerton without the need for traditional contour.
