1. When I’m deep in work (or thought), my hair must be up—but hair ties are uncomfortable, scrunchies seem more juvenile than that sophisticated kind of sweet (on me), and my current rotation of Emi Jay claw clips are feeling too kitsch for most of my wardrobe. (A Goldilocks dilemma of my own making, I know.) The jaw clips above, by France Luxe, have been the answer to all my hair woes. Annie Kreighbaum recommended them on an episode of Eyewitness Beauty and I immediately ordered two. They’re some of the most beautiful objects in my possession; one sweep, twist, and swift clipping motion and I instantly feel like Violet Baudelaire, all grown up. It’s the little luxuries, no?
(P.S.: When France Luxe calls a couture clip jumbo, it’s jumbo. I wear this Big Effing Clip daily and there’s no comparison: these French hair accessories just might be the best jaw clips on the market.)
2. Dating rent checks and journal entries “2023” came easy. Unlike in previous years, there’s no pause or hesitation: is this a true acceptance of the passage of time—one that comes with age?
3. A current fixation: blueberries. There’s deep satisfaction when the taut skin bursts at the bite. Forget berries by the handful: it’s a one-box-per-sitting situation.
4. How did I not know that Eve Babitz wrote an entire book about L.A.’s dancing scene? I spent my New Year’s Eve reading Two by Two (finish just before midnight) and was astounded by how her findings mirrored my own experience with Latin genres—on the opposite coast, of course. Or maybe I wasn’t surprised at all—Babitz’s life couldn’t be any more different from mine and yet, I can’t help but seek out the similarities between her words and my innermost thoughts.
5. The first week of 2023 has been incredibly good to me. Rainy and uncharacteristically grey, but good nonetheless.
