Giambattista Valli’s Spring/Summer 2009 RTW collection was, undeniably, one of my favorites. It embraced the fifties with a newer sense of luxurious romanticism; after all, that particular decade was one that epitomized femininity of a woman. Austerity, softened glamour, and classicality of Jackie-O, Audrey Hepburn, and ballerinas.
Presented were renditions of the iconic pieces of women’s fashion: the high waisted skirt and shorts, the little black dress, molded capes, A-line silhouetted dresses, the raise-waisted sack dresses. All of which were done with modern touches: the demure v-neck, slitted fronts, layers of tulle, flower prints, and girlish bows here and there. The collection leaves the first impression of conservative idealism; yet Valli’s coy placements of thigh high slits and low v-necks make for unbelievable cocktail frocks with couture-like formality. Structured yet frothy – a bit reminiscent of a Starbucks vanilla bean or strawberries and creme frappucinos for an inimitable touch of sweetness and airy feminity.
I imagine myself as an editor in these dresses and structured capes, Blahniks clacking in the marble halls of the Conde Nast building, Chanel 2.55 slung on the crook of my arm with papers and Blackberry in hand. Pretentious of me, yes, but I simply cannot help imagining these dresses on women of high executive power – from editors, to CEOS, to presidents of companies, to the likes of Michelle Obama. The power each of these dresses present is subtle yet implicative in a single glance; its balance of liquid-like satin and brocade and matte fabrics providing for both modern and historical ideals of femininity. It marks the role of the woman past in petticoats and modest cuts, and that of the woman present in its simplicity. Every pieces is swoon-worthy. (I’ve been pining over each and every model’s ensemble down the runway…)
And of course. Valli ended with quite the epic set of gowns – gowns of indescribable delicate couture, seemingly fitting only for the steps of the Louvre or for debutante balls with princes and princesses. The extravagance of the seemingly endless trains of tulle gowns and floral-inspired ruffles had an ethereal effect on the runway; the lightness of the colors and fabrics overtly decadent and opulent yet possessed a lightness that made the collection seemingly paradoxical out of context.
Oh la la, mon dieu! The shoes!! Currently and will always be dying over the platform sandals and pumps. Forevermore. My sentences become incoherent upon seeing these shoes; never have anything been so swoon-worthy, so perfect. It’s quite official: Giambattista Valli’s SS 2009 shoes are the best yet. Classic, sophisticated, feminine, and versatile – qualities that define the ideal shoe for every woman. From patent, to embellished with sequins, to reptile-print shoes in black, grayish-taupe, and pink…
Yes I’d like one of each now. Merci!
And we end with beauty. Coiffed hair of exaggerated proportions a bit like that of Oscar de la Renta and Yves Saint Laurent. Toned down, the hair would be quite perfect for work and evening outings – simple yet so stunning. The makeup was equally elegant; I do love the persistence in striving for natural beauty, touched up with only a bit of liner, mascara, brown shadow, and a neutral, nude-mauve lip.
“It’s about a metamorphosis. There’s a big change going on in these times”. – Giambattista Valli
It is. Without a doubt. The collection is a representation of the metamorphosis of a woman; a tribute to who she was in the past, and an acknowledgement of of nostalgic longing for those good times – times sans the economic crisis. It is an optimistic outlook on the predicament of our time; forget the darkness and bleak outlook on the financial state of the world. Embrace the ideal form of luxury; live for today. Dress for today.
bisous,
La C.
P.S.: Thank you, Najeema for leaving me the “Your Blog is Lovely” award!
oh la la i really just died. so beautiful.
oh. my. god. all the pieces are absolutely beautiful, and i had to stare at the gowns for just a little while more.
i’m also dying at the sight of those platforms.
*sigh* LOVE LOVE LOVE Giambattista Valli, always so dreamy, yet wearable! Those shoes! They look quite a lot like Charlotte Olympia’s designs, wonder if there was some collaboration there…
xx
What an incredible collection! I can easily see any of these pieces fitting perfectly into Michelle Obama’s wardrobe. 🙂
The first dress is my absolute favorite – love how it reminds me of the dresses girls wore in the 60s! 🙂
Sorry, 50s. 🙂
Live for today, dress for today, is a good concept. My youngest daughter reminded me of this just today. Weird. Anyway, the idea is to stop saving your special outfits for special occasions. There are some beautiful things hanging in my closet that I never wear. What am I waiting for?
Thanks for sharing, darling… I am in L O V E with this collection! xx
Ugh! SOOO Elegant!!
Swoon. Every single piece is gorgeous, and those SHOES–the pink platform pumps in the last photo make my heart go pitter pat!
Great post! Your writing is so easy for me to follow and understand unlike those I read on style or fashion magazines. My favorites are the little black dresses…redefined and elegant. Those nude shoes are killer…very killer! xxoxoxo

I really love this collection too, especially those big statement floral pieces =] they are really impressive! I really enjoy the shift in style, from a bright neon colour palette (SS08) to a toned-down one this spring.
Great photos. It looks like a wonderful collection. Hope your week is going well. Cheers!

Mmmmmmmhhhhmmmmmmmm…..
I’m melting away…. Giambattista Valli is also one on my favorites (and I’m really thinking about to keep the bag I’m having up for sale right now….). I adore all the GV collections and started to grab some items of the past collections, nothing spectacular but I love it!
The designs are so timeless classic and chic.
Great post, Kim!!
much love, s.
Gorgeous! That’s all I can say… Simply gorgeous!
xo
so divine!
lovely lovely! I wouldn’t mind one of those shoes!
When I reach a certain age, I’d start wearing 50’s inspired items. These will inspire me to sew similar styles. 🙂
It’s funny but Valli is probably my less favorite emergent italian artist. Compared to Aquilano & Rimondi, to Tisci ( ok, not THAT emergent^^ ), even to Colangelo I find it just… a little bit boring.
Of course it’s perfect, well done, sartorial but… sometimes I have the feeling I miss a soul there… and that was my impression with this collection. Also I’m not a 5o’ fan which is my problem and explains perhaps my ‘bof’-reaction to it…
But I do love the outfits you’ve selected ! And it still is a pleasure to see young brilliant designer… ‘di casa’ !
X.o.X.o dear !!
SO lovely. I’d rock all of it on a daily basis no matter what the occasion
(if only I could afford more than a button!)
aaaah i want everything in the whole collection! sad face xx
Oh, oh, the first dress! It’s adorable, I want to wear it right now!! And please give me a pair of those lovely shoes too, if i may choose: the first white ones please!
I’m curious how long my feet will be without pain when I’m wearing them… I quess not much longer than a minute.
This is fabulous!!! I love it!

classy, sexy and utterly luxurious.
Such an unbelievably stunning collection! Giambattista Velli always hits the mark for me 🙂 Those first three dresses you posted are so beautiful. I do love designers who can take classics, but really make it their own. And oh my, the gowns at the end were breathtaking!!
Oh my goodness this is beautiful!!! =] So perfect, so beauitful, so feminine! Exactly as you described!
i love the collection, especially those neutral-coloured outfits, particularly, capes.
i must admit the shoes are jaw-droppingly hot !

Oh these are such gorgeous art pieces. The colours and all! The fabric and the style.. Oh I could rave about it! Its simply breathtaking!
xx
Oh yes… swoon-worthy is the right word for it!!!
So many gorgeous DREAMTICKETS!!!

definitely one of my FAVE collections from spring! love your blog!
xox
I’ve always adored Mr. Valli’s designs but the day I actually saw these creations in person was the day I was completley blown away. I think most photos don’t do his clothes justice. My favorites were definitely the taffeta and chiffon gowns, slightly more opulent and more evening appropriate, but the detailing was just … wow.
Gorgeous shoes as well. I love the platform versions!
I like the shoes even better than the dresses. They are very feminine indeed and they look brilliant, no matter what color they are.
so elegant, chic and beautiful!!
those shoes are killer! luv that croc print. sickk.
Speechless… just gorgeous, with beautiful lines
i always love your analyses of designer collections. they’re so beautiful! you should write these things for them. they’d be proud.
those shoes (esp those pink pumps) are tdf!!
