I do hate to admit that a majority of my summer – besides working, dance team practices and the occasional outing – was spent lounging about in my basement (simply because it is cooler, temperature-wise). Reading, collaging (for my inspiration journal), writing, putting off summer homework, watching a bit of TV, and of course, blogging. The likes. Sometimes in the midst of doing something my mind wanders a bit; I space out, my eyes glaze over, I stare off and let the subconscious take over.
One particular evening (or was it the afternoon? I lose track of time in the summer…) I gazed off, unable to concentrate on whatever I had been doing. My eye caught the eye of one particular dust particle – resembling a flying bit of a dandelion – floating ever so nonchalantly in the air. Not floating. Rather, riding the air, undisturbed and tranquil.
I’ve thought about it before. I do believe that there may be another world – or worlds, plural. Perhaps even another universe beyond our own beloved galaxy, either omnipotent or just as blissfully ignorant as we Earthlings are. Or maybe not even beyond our own galaxy, but within. I can’t help but think of Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas – that there could, quite possibly, be vast worlds within something as tiny as a snowflake. Like Whoville; not much different than our own Earth, or maybe completely different. Much happier, much more peaceful: a world sans hate, sans prejudice, sans war. Seemingly impossible in ours, but wholly probable in that tiny universe within that dust particle.
And what if our every step, our every breath effects these ubiquitous, unknown universes around us? An angry slam of the doors multiplies in magnitudes that become strong enough to destroy an entire galaxy of innocent creatures. A giggle or a kiss or a look full of undying love has the ability to make the sun shine in another. Depression that causes rain; anger that causes torrential storms.
I do have a point in my mindless ramblings and wild imagination. Everything we do influences someone, or something, in one way or another. A smile could save the life of a stranger on a street. A careless toss of a scrap paper on the side of the highway leads another driver to believe that it simply is okay to just litter. The former leads to that stranger’s happy life down the future; the latter to a world of a dying Mother Nature. Regardless of what the action was, it snowballs into a chain reaction that can change a life for better or for worse.
But it all begins with a particle of dust.

La C.

Have you read any books by Madeline L’Engle? I think you would love them – they were a favorite when I was growing up. And of course, the Phillip Pullman Dark Materials series is all about Dust and alternate universes. Awesome literature 🙂
La Couturier says
@Leia: It’s quite funny that you mention them – she is by far one of my favorite children’s authors! I thoroughly enjoyed her books (and still do), for she is truly incredible! I have not heard of Phillip Pullman Dark Materials – I would very much so love to read them. Thank you for the suggestion darling! xx

Ma chère La C., voici un magnifique article. Très intéressant, très proustien : tout un monde se déploie à partir d’une poussière. Made me think to Woody Allen’s ‘Stardust Memories’ too.

What a beautiful thought. Thank you for this post! A lovely reminder that despite our every day stresses, we should stop and think that there is a bigger world and universe out there and life is actually pretty sweet.

Sigh, I do like to believe that there are whole other worlds as well. Kind of makes you think about the ripples of your actions, no?

Really well said! And it’s so true; whatever we do or say; really have an influence over someone else; whether good or bad! Which really goes to show how words can make or break a person!
Aw; and all your really awesome “ramblings” about Whoville and snowflake and stuff makes me miss Christmas so much! So looking foward to it now when fall has barely start=p

so true – we are all interconnected by our thoughts and energies. i’m a big believe in that.
If you’re interested in this kind of thing, you should read up on string theory. really mind bending stuff.
by writing this post and expressing these thoughts, you, my friend, are positively influencing the world.
thank you for this post.

Hey La C, do you know what you just did? You just laid your soul bare. That was unbelievably trusting of you. I have never really done that on a post.
What you said reminded me of a couple of things:
The eyes glazing over and watching the dust particle-Meditation.
The way you thought of other worlds within our own-The first time I did purple microdot (back in the day when drugs were not that dangerous, and I only did it a few times), and I read Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Actually, I think another time I read The Prophet.
Anyways, I commend you, and I can’t help being a little jealous that you came up with this “sans drug”. he he.

I adore this; it’s beautiful, wise, and a little wistful, too. Every moment on earth does count. i think very few people understand the immensity of one look, one touch, one smile. Thank you for making my day a little brighter. Please blog forever!

All I can say is that not many seventeen year olds have the capacity or imagination or insight that you do. And to blog about it for the world to read? Like diane said, it’s brave of you!!
All I can say is that you’re my hero. You. Will. Go. Far.
Never before have my eyes been opened! And you make philosophy beautiful & poetical!

P.S.: You’re wiser than a lot of the older generations. It seriously amazes me to no end to know that there is one person out there who can have such a passion for so many things and can express them so well! Your wise for your age, LC

I’m saving this post to my favorites to read when I’m feeling uninspired or too materialistic.
Because honestly, thebaglady was so right. You’re so wise for your age, I can’t even believe that we’re the same age. I swear you write & sound like you’re much older!
So beautifully written & said. This is what sets you apart from all the other “oo let’s all copy Rumi & Erin Wasson & be androgynous hobos & carry fancy cameras and pretend we’re so awesome” bloggers. You’re you, sophisticated, intellectual, insightful, & just plain fucking amazing.
Excuse the language. 😉

Beautifully written! I really appreciated your point that everything we do has an effect on someone else, no matter how small. It reminds me of a quote I saw, but I don’t know who said it: “We all mold one another’s dreams. We all hold each other’s fragile hopes in our hands. We all touch each other’s hearts.”
Heather says
I love all of your posts, they’re amazing, I was absolutely shocked when I came across the post that said you were 17, your writing style is the best I’ve found in blogs and your whole page is extremely well put together. However it is “Horton hears a who” not “the grinch that stole Christmas” that you were referring to. But still an excellent post
