LaQuan Smith serves grit, glamour, and body straight up—and how refreshing it is to see space given to women to just be! It’s a girl’s world in Smith’s sphere, and here, she’s in command. It’s her body through her gaze, society’s misplaced values in prudence be damned.
Strategic cutouts are Smith’s signature and though they’re less daring this season, the placements are still created for the brave. The color palette is beautifully presented (again, we see a trend: red, purple, and blue anchored by neutrals), and this time, it’s the textural play that leaves you wanting more. There’s a clear shift in the brand’s execution and what’s most exciting is knowing that Smith’s point of view remains intact throughout his evolution. He’s not covering his girls up, he’s being practical; it’s a fall collection, after all, and no amount of mulled cider aprés-ski can keep you warm.
To have Julia Fox open the show, though, was the ultimate statement. It’s no surprise how media (and its devotees) have tried to turn her into the internet’s next favorite meme—evidence of how misogyny, including the internalized, is so deeply rooted. There’s much to do and unpack, of course, but for the 15 minutes you’re watching LaQuan Smith’s show, the message is clear:
You can have your slinky dresses and be taken seriously, too.
