Louis Vuitton: Resort 2009
Whilst browsing through style.com, I came across the Louis Vuitton Resort 2009 Collection. And the surprising thing was: I instantly fell in love. It’s just a bit weird, perhaps a bit alarming that I even thought that, nonetheless publicly proclaimed my love for LV’s most recent collection for all the world to see. I’ve never really liked the brand; usually I’d just overlook it with the occasional bits of “What was Marc Jacob thinking?!” for it was always just so… blah (for lack of a better word – or sound, for that matter – to describe LV). But the Resort Collection, on the other hand, was incredible & impeccably simple yet beautifully structured. Either it’s the apocalypse/I’ve gone insane or Louis Vuitton has taken a turn.
Perhaps I’m biased when I say that it is definitely the latter, in the sense that I probably would rather not call myself insane (just yet). But all of that aside, I am not one to fall in love with the monogram emblazoned bags (*ahem* Louis Vuitton, guilty as charged). It does seem a bit obnoxious, if not too much, but on the pink tote, it looks lovely! Since it is all in one color, the monogrammed logo acts as a print that adds interest and dimension to an otherwise simple bag. That color is rather alluring too; hot pink is such a fabulous color that brightens up any outfit, any time of day. And that size – absolutely perfect for toting anything and everything anywhere, from my beloved laptop, to a few books, the usual necessities, and maybe even a change of clothing (in case?)!
Oh, how that bag, in all its perfections: color, size, and structure, makes me swoon! And it works rather well with a simple black dress. I love the casual look of this one; it can be easily worn in the day, belted, and paired with some statement shoes (like the pink lucite ones that match the bag!). Adorable, I say! The slightly more formal LBD, to the left, is just as fabulous. The perfect cocktail or evening dress, the length is sweet, the back saucy. I love it when a dress (or any item of clothing, for that matter) is constructed so perfectly that it accentuates and hides. This dress does exactly that (through my judgement from the image): the dress is not too tight, but fitted enough to show curves. The little pouf of a skirt hides what a woman generally wishes to disguise or thin – the thighs, the stomach, and of course, the little bum of a behind. It hits at the right length where the legs of the wearer is elongated whether she is short or tall; it also happens to be a modest hemline which makes it appropriate for almost any occasion.
And these next two pieces from the collection hardly look Louis Vuitton! If I had not known the designer label, I would have guessed the dress to be a hybrid of Gucci meets Versace meets Donna Karan (Spring 09, that is). Anything but Louis! LV definitely has taken a youthful turn; this dress, though modest in the amount of skin shown, is a rather refreshing alternative to the stuffy silhouettes & starched wools. The fabric is heavenly, pleated and falling at all the right places to create this beautiful Grecian effect. It’s like a maxi dress gone glamorous, for lack of a better phrase of description. Just imagine wearing it, hair loose in the wind on a summery day in Greece…
That A-line jacket would be such a wonderful addition to any closet, regardless of the season. I’m in love with the boxy, cropped fit. The shiny material adds a bit of glam, upgrading the typical coat from boring to fabulous. The colors are magnificent too; just a few asymmetrical lines brushed in carefree strokes of yellow, black, and blue creates a soft watercolor effect that balances the squarish structure. Not only is the piece versatile, but can transform outfits from simply “blah” (there goes that word again) to “am-ah-zing” (as the one & only Rachel Zoe would say). Wear it over a little black dress to lighten up the colors; pair it with a simple black tee/tank with jeans; wear it to work with a loose tank tucked into high waisted trousers. Oh, the possibilities!
xoxo,
La C.
P.S. I really am being ridiculously spoiled here – yet another award was bestowed upon me, this time by the loveliest and sweetest girls ever, Hui (well, if I am to be all technical, then I should address you by your proper name: Sylvia Eloise) & Rachel of Fashion is Tension! Thank you so much, darlings – receiving it made my day!

Congrats on your awards! You deserve them! I love the second black dress.
A very similar thing happened to me with LV. I was flipping through a fashion mag and fell in love with a tulle-y black skirt, only to check the designer and discover it was none other. I think LV is improving. Or at least changing.

Bold colours = Bold loving
A nice analysis of Vuitton! I also agree that somehow, when it’s not so overtly LV LV LV everywhere, the appeal increases and it gives you a chance to appreciate the style and craftsmanship without distraction.
Awesome read, awesome you♥

and i love the ads for LV resort 2009, i love the monochrome logo bags. so fun, young and cute. and they come in bright, shocking colors. that pink is a great shade that marc often uses in his marc jacobs and marc by marc jacobs lines as well. and could that dress with the back straps be any cuter?! it’s a simple design, and yet at the same time very innovative and fresh.
SOMETHING PICASSO says
mmm, this is very unexpected. I hardly follow what Marc Jacobs does for Louis Vuitton, but I’m glad you brought this to our attention… definitely going to keep my eyes peeled from now on.

This collection is fantastic!! Love it all as well!

Totally agree with you on the blahness of overt monogram bags. It just seems mildly obnoxious to me to have a huge bag splattered with logos. That being said, I do have a Gucci monogram clutch! Never say never I guess 😉
