I’ll be honest: Tome flew under the radar for me. I wanted to love previous collections—after all, women like Dorothy Parker, Sylvia Plath, and Louise Bourgeois were pinned to their inspiration boards.
I finally get the hype. Voluminous silhouettes coupled with menswear stripes and the occasional cutout juxtaposed beautifully; I’m not a fan of ruffles, but make it an asymmetrical detail on a halter top and I’m sold. Everything we’ve ever taken for granted—the ball gown, the trouser, the trench coat, etc.—has been reimagined. Deconstructed and reconstructed. Definitely feminine, but not an archetype of what some designers interpret as “intelligent yet chic” womenswear.
Could the average woman pull off the cinched paperbag waistline intricate layers (peppered with ruffles, no less)? Probably not, though it’s not to say a girl couldn’t dream of wearing head-to-toe Tome to the office come spring.
