I spotted these high-waisted shorts, in all their chili-pepper red glory, from across the store and knew they were the one.
(I’ve got a thing for dramatics.)
High-waisted shorts that fit both my child-bearing hips and waist at once are a rare thing, so when opportunity comes, I seize. I love the longer length and tailored details that beg to be worn in a (creative) office or dressed down for the occasion, but it was the color that ultimately drew me in. It’s the perfect shade of red with the slightest hint of orange. I can’t wait until the weather hits the seventies again and I can pair them with one of my beloved AA turtleneck cropped tops and strappy sandals, but until then, I’ll make do with a warmer approximation: a gratuitous outfit-of-the-evening snap for a late-night sushi dinner. Nothing extravagant but teetering on the man-repelling end of the fashion spectrum—which is a look I’ve come to appreciate given the mood.

I’ve always wanted a pair of good quality, high waisted shorts. The only thing I didn’t want was the steep price tag that came with it. Well I finally found the solution to this problem! I came across a lovely website called Etsy. Etsy allows sellers to sell their own custom goods. Now what does this have to do with high waisted shorts? I’ll tell you!

On floral… um. I’ve never been much of floral fan. I may be a little diva-esque, a little over the top, even sometimes a little girly, but not THAT feminine. I’d like to think my style is a cross between slutty librarian, punky office lady, feisty nerd and Korean street style… or at least leaning that way. (Yes, more labels–I love defining things.) So floral is just really, really not my thing. But as a Christmas bonus/present, my boss gave me an insanely generous shopping spree at a local boutique that just opened up in Hawaii Kai, my ‘hood… and it was at MikiNola Boutique that I discovered a hidden love for bold florals. Store owner Dara handed it to me in the fitting room, knowing my love for stripes and mixing prints… and the moment I put it on, my jaw dropped and Dara and the sales associate (whose name I totally blanked on–I’m sorry!) both gasped to me, “omigod, soooo cute!” And I don’t think they were just trying to sell it to me.

I also love this look, but it’s one of those things that has to be carefully executed and on the right body type, which as usual, seems limited to tall skinny girls. I wish someone would make high waisted straight pants. By all accounts I should need a shorter rise, but for some reason even mid-rise jeans fit me like low rise. I can’t figure out why.

Same here, Annie! Mid-rise is always low-rise on me, probably because my thighs/derriere fill out more of the jeans. (Just a theory.) A high-waist straight leg pant would be heaven-sent for curvier girls like us who can’t always pull of the super skinny! x
