Haven’t had made the time to read much at the start of this year, but I did want to share because I did love these books so:
- Clarice Lispector is always so good. I picked up this copy of Selected Cronicas at 192 Books three years ago just after returning from a trip to Los Angeles. I remember feeling particularly inspired—a change of pace and sun will do wonders for the soul—and was finally ready to dive into Lispector’s world. (Before then, I was as intimidated as I was afraid I’d finish her books too quickly; I knew I would love her work and pacing myself is a skill I haven’t yet acquired.) I didn’t touch the book since (I found the receipt when I finally opened the cover) but to read it now, this year, feels right.
- I’ve also had Ocean Vuong in my collection for some time now, but I just was never in the necessary headspace for stories so heavy. I read On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous first, then immediately started (and finished in one sitting) Night Sky with Exit Wounds. Both are achingly, well—gorgeous.
- Bad Feminist is seminal reading. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to even get my hands on a copy, but I’m so glad I did. In an era where Gen Z feminists are bringing discourse to the TikTok masses but IRL, the likelihood of Roe v. Wade being overturned looms ominously overhead, this was a necessary read.
