Hello!
I must say I adore your blog, very inspirational with great fashion tips. This is also the very reason I turn to you! My dad has recently been talking about going on a cruise in the carribean in the month of october. Now I’m the kind of girl that likes rock and roll and turning heads, so i was actually considering to buy lace umbrellas, floor lenght skirts and corsets. I’m sure you must be chuckling at my vision right now, but what girl didn’t want to own Rose’s wardrobe at some point? I know I did haha Now, not only would this be terribly impractical but also very hot. I know this because I live on an island myself. Now, I don’t wish to look like a tourist on that cruise, I don’t want any trashy hawaiian florals (I’m sure you would agree) and I’d love to feel stylish and comfortable (meaning, not hot ahha). I saw a picture of a girl wearing a flowery crop corset and a pair of light wash denim cut offs, wedges and a pair of round sunglasses , but i feel that i might be too full figured for that look. I’m about 5’8, have an hour glass figure, long limbs and a full head of curly brown goldy locks hair, I love wearing black and jeans and combat boots, but I know this is not fitting.
So would you please help me? I would appriciate it so much.
love,
Ayla.
Ah, a cruise – how I am in dire need of an exotic getaway for a month-long vacation! Here I am, typing away data and archiving paperwork at the courthouse, where an occasional, forlorn glance out of the window would only bring into view a long line at the entrance of the building, with security guards eyeing suspicious persons who have come for their court dates.
I’m hardly exaggerating, either.
Anyhoo, darlings. Do keep in mind, however, that clothing should be layer-able and lightweight, and that both apparel and accessories do not cause awkward tan lines. Because that, my dears, is perhaps the worst part about getting a bit of summer glow.
{the necessities.}
- Flat sandals. For the beach, walking around, and overall comfort. And a pair of flip-flops for your room.
- Heeled sandals. For walking around the ship, on the little islands you’ll stop by, or for casual evening dinners.
- Heels. Simply because heels are necessities (for me, at least) coming into handy for dinners that are semi-formal or formal, for attending evening events, and for parties on the cruise ship.
- Large Sunglasses! A la Posh. And a hat, if you’d like.
- Bathing suits. Plural, of course. A bit of variation is lovely: one-pieces, bikinis, monokinis.
- Cover-up. By cover I hardly mean a simple towel wrapped about yourself; no, darling. Think kaftans, maxi-dresses, slips, sheer dresses, rompers, or simply dresses in general. Not only will you be the chic-est on the beach/pool/ship, the cover-up doubles as another day’s outfit (we do love practicality and lightweight packing), also allowing you to go from the beach to a cocktail or shopping trip in under a minute.
Denim shorts, bandage skirts, knit skirts, casual day dresses, tees, semi-sheer loose tanks, blouses, etc. Your average daywear. - Cocktail dresses and an evening gown. For the cruiseship dinners that require semi-/formal wear.
{what to wear.}
A cruiseship wardrobe, broken down by different types of styles! All items from either Net-a-porter, Forever 21, or Chickdowntown – my absolute favorites.
{bohemian.}
the color palette: neutrals, greens, browns, taupe, gold
think: Vanessa Hudgens, Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, Rachel Zoe. Missoni-inspired prints, flowing tops, maxi dresses, straw fedoras, braided leather sandals, bangles and cuffs, Grecian silhouettes, asymmetrical lines, natural/organic inspired jewelry (wooden bracelets, feathered necklaces, raw stones), vintage Ray-ban aviators, denim cutoffs.
{classic sophisticate.}

LBD, LRD, retro two-pieces, black bikinis, black cut-out monokinis, flats, pumps, patent heels, high waisted shorts, tailored shorts, shift dresses, silver jewelry, floppy hats, oversized sunglasses, clean lines, button down shirts, fitted crew neck tees, high waisted skirts.
{feminine & girly.}
the color palette: white, cream, pinks, lavenders, mint green, & any other pastel color.
think: cupcakes, Katherine Heigl, Mariah Carey. Itsy-bitsy bikinis, ruffles, cardigans, ribbons & bows, silver jewelry, chiffon, minidresses, pastels, kitten heels, round-toe flats, rhinestones, flowery hair clips, garden-inspired cocktail rings, layered & ruffled skirts, embellished tanks, sheer blouses.
{grunge-chic.}
the color palette: gray, black, purple, gunmetal, earthy black-browns.
think: Erin Wasson, Alexander Wang, Rumi Neely. Loose, semi-sheer tees, oversized sheer tees as cover-ups, boyfriend jeans rolled up, vintage denim cutoffs, strappy sandals, strappy bejeweled heels, Balmain-inspired, messy hair, ankle booties, jacquard prints in place of plaid, gladiator-inspired heels, jersey tank dresses/maxis, cropped tops.
{rock-chic.}
the color palette: grays, black, navy, silver.

Studded denim, cut-out cocktail dresses dresses, cropped denim jackets, denim bustiers, leather minis, embellished sandals, studded heels, knuckle rings, silver chains, crosses, destroyed denim, bleached apparel, bandage dresses, Elizabeth & James deconstructed tees, cropped tees & vintage shirts.
{simply wild.}
the color palette: brights & neons paired against black/grays, prints
think: Exotics, croc-embossed heels/pumps, gladiator flats, gladiator-inspired heels, animal prints, neon and bright colors, bandage minis, semi-sheer tanks over American Apparel’s bandeau bras, Wildfox Couture, rompers.

I’m all for the Classic Sophisticate meets Feminine and Girly 🙂
Great inspiration, I’m dying to go the south of France, my grandparents have a house by the beach, and home to the Alps having pic-nic by the lake… in the meantime still Uni in London, but the parks here are filled with fashion-conscious arty students and über-elegant old ladies with cute dogs.. I’m loving it so much! Sorry for the description, I had to share these impressions with you! 🙂 So summer wardrobe is strapless and lace slipdresses so far, with platform sandals, in nudes and tan. Will become black and white on the French Riviera, and finally flower prints and corals/peach/salmon in the Alps.. do you approve of these summer choices Mademoiselle la Couturière? 😉
Many kisses! x

Also, in case you haven’t seen it yet, I passed on an award to you, La C. http://www.the-anthology.com/2009/07/istanbul-turkey-3/

Your taste is truly flawless! Especially loving the bohemian!

Great advice! Although I must add if you are planning on walking a lot in the islands, grab some comfy sneakers, the brick streets aren’t safe for high heels. Plus, you’ll feet would be hurting.

I was prepared pretty well for my cruise, but here’s what I wish I had brought:
A better assortment of hair ties and conditioner. The cruise ships are windy little buggers; sometimes you have to pass through an outside area to get to where an activity is. And all of that salt air tends to frizz out the hair, ugh.
Concealer. The lighting in the islands is different than up north, weird. It shows up every little flaw.
Somehow, I thought the cruise would be very “Marilyn Monroe/Jane Russell”. It wasn’t. It was more like Jimmy Buffet meets Jerry Springer. I was a little overdressed, except on formal night, and then I fit right in.
Con Brio says
Now I am dying to go on a cruise myself. I once went on a cruise to Mexico and it was fabulous 🙂 Anyways, beautiful post, as always! The bathing suits are gorgeous and the cover ups are drool-worthy!

I’m definitely of the buy-many-swim-suits variety of person. I think I currently own a dozen of them… I pick one up every fall, when they’re cheap!

I really like all of your tips for a cruise and for a summer vacation in general. And you gave options for all types of body and not just limited to one
Brigadeiro says
Gorgeous post! Love the ensembles, and I so wish I were going on a Cruise too! 🙂 La C., are you wanting to become a lawyer? I used to be one…
xx
La Couturier says
Brigadeiro: I’m quite conflicted about it – I know I would love to go into fashion, but right now I’m thinking about journalism, business communications, international relations/law, the likes. But law is always on the back of my mind – I’m in a Law & Public Services academic program at my high school (which is, as the name suggests all about law: business law, criminal/constitutional/civil law, politics, governmetn) and interning for my local courthouse. Gahh I don’t know… hhaha (:
