I’ve done one for the petite ladies, so it is only fair that one is done for the tall (and because I’ve been flooded with requests!). So darlings, here it is!
It is only human nature to want what we don’t have; the grass may seem greener on the other side of the fence, but as we’ve all heard one too many times, we must embrace what we have and make it work for us. Surely you may envy the petite girls who wear six inch heels and still have to tippy-toe to kiss their dates good night, but just as you envy us, we petite ones stare and wish we could forgo heels and not have to tippy-toe to kiss our dates and have them stoop down. Height-age is good; somehow, height is always associated with authority and power. Use it to your advantage, ladies! It is most definitely an advantage come time for one of those chaotic designer-blow-out sales; you have first dibs on anything on a higher shelf!
So what to wear when you’re tall?
After days (I think a full week now) of attempting to write this particular post, I think it is quite safe to conclude that you taller ladies have no restriction or certain clothing to avoid when dressing. That said, it would be much easier to accentuate and make the most of your height. The only thing left for you to figure out is how to dress your body shape well. Anywho, onward and forthward!
Long Tops (Like Cardigans, Tunics, Tees, Sweaters, etc.)
Take advantage of your height ladies! Whereas longer tops may shorten/make stouter the petites, no such worries plague you! Body shape/type is simply irrelevant in this case; longer tops are wearable and hardly tricky to wear. Do use your height to your advantage and wear those beautiful long cardigans over a tee and jeans. In some cases, they can even make you seem a few inches shorter – which would be considered a plus for some!
Empire-Waist Dresses/Tops
I love empire waisted dresses or tops; they’re quite wearable for all women. But somehow, on the taller ladies (lucky you!) they look breathtaking! Such style elongates and slims your body; whether worn with casual sandals or heels, empire waists always look so gorgeous.
Maxi Dresses
A must have in every tall woman’s closet. Emphasis on the must-have! Definitely beautiful in the summer; pair it with strappy gladiators, braid your hair, and stick a fresh flower in it. Goddess-like? Of course. Such dresses, especially those in Grecian styles, accentuate your height; floor length maxis create an illusion of continuing, infinite length.
Extreme Lengths
Of course capris and ankle-length pants are wearable, but such “in-between” lengths tend to shorten your overall appearance. Whether or not you are leggy is irrelevant in that shorts and long pants look quite spectacular on taller women. But if possess enough confidence to wear tiny shorts, by all means, go for it! Pair with flats to soften the look.
Flats
If you wish to downplay your height, flats are, by far, the simplest way to look chic sans the extra height.
Modest Hemlines
Of course nothing is stopping you from wearing show-stopping bandage dresses and mini skirts; but do keep in mind that because you are taller, skirts and dresses have the tendency to look even shorter. Keeping skirts and dresses at the length of your fingertips, the least, is ideal for everyday.
High-Waisted Skirts & Pants
They do wonders for all women, regardless of height, making all considerably slender and just a bit taller. Though high waisted bottoms have the potential to make you seem even taller, the illusion of additional inches/centimeters is only beneficial. It has the ability to elongate your frame, to slim your waistline, and add a touch of elegance.
Solid Colors
Wearing solid colors or monochromatic outfits further add to the long & lean effect. Solid colors give the illusion of, once again, continuity of length.
. . .
I should hope that this rather humble list helps a little. I must admit that I can only give the best of advice in what I know; and since I lack the vertical inches, I can only conjure what I imagine to be most flattering on the taller girls.
bisous,
La C.
P.S.: My internet has finally been fixed! Hurrah! *dances with glee*

I love this! These ideas are fab; I’m going to send this page to my friends! They always seem to have a little trouble trying to embrace & accentuate their height!

Thank you so much for writing this! I definitely appreciate it. 🙂
I’ve always been a little iffy on maxi dresses, but this post has convinced me to try one. Thanks!
La Couturier says
Hannah: You must try it! It looks absolutely breathtaking on tall girls =] I do apologize for such a short/not that detailed list. I wish I could’ve helped a bit more! But, with my lack in the vertical department, I tried ;]
Bisous,

I’m a shorty myself, but must admit that I love how maxi dresses look on tall girls. In fact, maxi dresses and tall girls go together like peanut butter and jelly – a marvelously delicious combination! 🙂

La C: You did a great job! Your list is much appreciated, as always. Keep up the good work! 🙂

Great tips, dear.
Well I’m not a very tall woman, but I’m taller than the average of women around me.
Despite being tall or not I love maxi dresses.
All the best

I’m pretty petite but I have to say this list is pretty nice! I’m pretty envious of tall people + maxi dresses also!! Just looking at a maxi dress makes me automatically think that the dress would eat me alive. ahaha
There is a tiny girl I know that has a cute leopard print maxi dress and rocks that pretty well though..hmmm

I usually wear such things as in your lists, but I personally think short dresses look even better than long dresses on tall people… I’ve noticed that what suits me the best is the ‘A / trapèze – dress’, à la Courrèges, or Cardin, or… well, sixties x). It’s beautiful because it makes killer legs, and they seem thinner with the large part at the bottom…
But maybe it’s not the same effect on every tall girl ;D.
Cropped jackets also emphatize the length…. and -this sounds pretty stupid but it really does the trick- chignons make you a fantastical ‘vertical-effect’…
Things NOT to wear are, as you say, are ‘middle’-length items…. and, I think, ‘5o pin-up style – vintage beachwear for example… mainly ridiculous ! -….
Well, that was just my small contribution !
But your post is really great, I’m searching the ultimate vestal-dress since almost 4 years now… I think I’ll have to sew it myself ! x)

excellent tips. well done.
i am nearly 5’9″ and high heels make me feel like a towering amazon. some thing this is good, but then try standing next to the shorties. ugh. and watching them strain their necks as they look up at you. sometimes i wear tall wedges, but not that often.
please forgive. i am babbling and making this about me.
i am going to try some of your tips. i am not sure if they will work for me, but i am willing to try. :]

I LOVE those Jimmy Choo sandals!!!
I’m alwyas in trouble when reading “what to wear” articles about height: I’ve never thought myself tall (I’m 170 cm – 5.57 feet I guess.. not so sure), but I can’t say I’m petite, too =)

Actually, I think that cropped pants of any kind look best on tall women. If their legs look shorter, it doesn’t really matter because they’re tall anyway!
