“We are the girls with anxiety disorders, filled appointment books, five-year plans. We take ourselves very, very seriously. We are the peacemakers, the do-gooders, the givers, the savers. We are on time, overly prepared, well read, and witty, intellectually curious, always moving… We pride ourselves on getting as little sleep as possible and thrive on self-deprivation. We drink coffee, a lot of it. We are on birth control, Prozac, and multivitamins… We are relentless, judgmental with ourselves, and forgiving to others. We never want to be as passive-aggressive are our mothers, never want to marry men as uninspired as our fathers… We are the daughters of the feminists who said ‘You can be anything’ and we heard ‘You have to be everything.'”
A passage from somewhere on the web I’ve saved for a while now.

Although my mother has never been passive aggressive and my father is really one of the most inspiring people I know, I really love this quote and what it stands for 🙂

Agreed! And that’s another thing that must be brought to light – this idea of establishing a binary for traits… who’s to say only women are sensitive and men are ambitious? All these characteristics that have been categorized are not female, not male, but just simply, h u m a n .

I love an ambitious woman, I find that such an empowering trait! and a sensitive man, isn’t that what all women keep asking for? so I don’t understand why they are categorized. I mean I understand to a certain extent. for example women tend to be more nurturing in some ways simply because they have carried their children and that I think creates a bond which if continued into adulthood, cannot be compared to anything else. But that doesn’t mean fathers cannot be nurturing as well!
