Diana Vreeland, editor of Harper’s Bazaar and later the editor-in-chief of American Vogue, though as fabulous & legendary as she was, had to begin modestly. The start of her career first began as a writer for Bazaar (we all wish our modest beginnings could start there…), where she wrote her much renowned column titled “Why Don’t You“. There, she established her own position and perspective of fashion and the lifestyle of women: there was no need to lead a boring, un-fabulous life. Rather, the world of fashion was interesting & meant to be explored. As was life. Thus, she would ask, “Why don’t you own twelve diamond roses of all sizes?”, even prodding further to ask “Why don’t you be ingenious & make yourself into something else?”
Pourquoi pas?
So why not? Why not ask yourself such questions, materialistic, deep, or simply just for fun? And why not actually do them (if tangible, of course)?
Why Don’t You…
…splurge on that Louboutin boot you’ve been pining for?
…allocate your first paycheck toward a fund for that delicious, black Prorosus 35cm Birkin?
…call sick into work/school, bring out the truffles & chocolates, and indulge while watching a whole season of Gossip Girl or SATC?
…be a jetsetter & go on that trip to Paris you’ve been dying to plan but claim “I don’t have the time”?
…set up a theme for each day of the week & dress the part? Monday, Anna Wintour. Tuesday, Carine Roitfeld. Wednesday, Glamorous Hippie. Thursday, Agyness. Friday…
…throw a cocktail party?
…and your friends throw a masquerade? Masks are a must! Think Marie Antoinette meets The Phantom of the Opera‘s masquerade scene.
…treat yourself to dinner in that fancy restaurant & dress up for it!
…spend an entire weekend searching for that perfect dress/pant/shoe/top you’ve always wanted?
…write a letter to your style icon? Or even better, try writing to an editor of a magazine & see if they’ll reply?
…dig up the old boxes of vintage magazines & reread them for inspiration?
…on your birthday, buy Marie-Antoinette worthy cakes & make yourself the model of a birthday photoshoot?
…read a book in a foreign language? (I really want to read something in French…)
…be completely glamorous for a day, even if you’re just doing a little errand here & there? Bring on the mysterious black sunglasses, the cocktail rings, the red lips, the heels, the “it” bag.
…indulge in luxurious truffles as you read a big book by the fireplace or on a couch?
…completely reorganize your closet? By color, season, brand, whatever you choose. Style your closet so it looks approachable & like a boutique!
…carpe diem! Dye your hair a color you’ve always wanted (non/semi-permanent might be best for this). Wear something you’d never wear on a normal occasion. Wear sequins, wear crazy eye-makeup, do anything and everything!
…pretend you’re a magazine editor for a day and make your own copy of The Devil Wears Prada’s “the Book”? Print out a cover, glue it to the front of a notebook, & fill it with your own pictures – use it as your inspiration book! (Miss at la Playa has the details here!)
…buy a pretty parasol? Whether you use it or not for a stroll in the park is up to you!
…give your room a makeover! Model it after, say, Serena’s chambre in Gossip Girl!
Any other ideas? Leave it in the comments!
xoxo,
La C.

So many fantastic “why-don’t-you’s”! I’m so inspired to try them all out. Thank you so much for this great post sweetie 🙂

Can we discuss the Birkin? I know it’s a status item but I’m SO OVER IT. I’m sick of people carrying it around thinking it makes them stylish or it’s a statement piece. Having it doesn’t mean you have good style or are important, just that you have enough money to buy that bag. I don’t want to see anyone under 50 carrying it as well, it looks so awkward on girls in their 20’s toting it around like they know what they’re doing. I keep seeing it all over and it’s been driving me crazy lately.
my contribution to the actual post at hand is…
why don’t you take a day trip to a part of your state/country/city you haven’t been to yet!

I’ve always wanted to read a book in Spanish! And also take up Swedish lessons but sadly there are none near me.
Why don’t you bake a cake but eat all the cake mix before it can even get baked? Hehe
modelizer says
totally agree on the actual craftsmanship/process of making the bag. but I swear there’s been some sort of influx of them recently and it’s confusing me because I thought we were in a recession? I blame suri cruise 😉

I LOVE Diana Vreeland. She was such an incredible character. I had the good fortune of being able to go over the Visionaire issue that had all those copies of Vreeland memos and she was absolutely hilarious! Thank you so much for this post…
Why don’t you… create a logo for yourself and have it embroidered, lasered, tattooed, or stamped on everything you own?

“…allocate your first paycheck toward a fund for that delicious, black Prorosus 35cm Birkin?”
I’d always shut that thought down because I’d always thought it was incredulous and thus, eventually futile.
But now that you’ve put it in such an inspiring perspective…I am motivated again.
This was a great read and I enjoyed the thoughts they generated. Also, you have been so sweet in faithfully stopping by, I wish I could buy you a Birkin!
Love,
Hui

Great post! So inspirational. Diana Vreeland was such a bad ass. Did you know she threw away most of her shoes after wearing them once? Crazy!

What a cute post! Ok, here’s mine:

Why don’t you….
– write a list of every boy or girl you’ve kissed?
– invite all your friends round for breakfast this Sunday?
– flirt with the boy in the corner shop?
– buy yourself a big bunch bunch of flowers?
– write an intriguing magazine article about yourself – as if you were living your ideal life – and keep it for inspiration?

Off to read the rest of your blog! Hope you check out mine too. xoxox

I really love this post! It’s so important to live life with joy and not become bogged down with routine. Trying new things is the only way we can grow and discover new wonders.
I have another one: …spend a weekend at home with croissants, jam, and other treats and rent tons of retro movies (50s, 60s, 70s) and collect style ideas.
or…
spend a day (or two) lounging in a movie house that features foreign films instead of Hollywood blockbusters.

I love those suggestions! Now I just have to decide what to do first…
