Brandon Maxwell<\/strong><\/a> always feels quintessentially American. Fall collections tend to embody Upper East Side prep \u00e0 la Ralph Lauren (an Americana point of view not to be confused with prim\u2014though it’s no less polished than the heritage house) with the playful spirit of Michael Kors, circa mid-2000s. What sets all apart, of course, is Maxwell’s reimagination of familiar traditions to include his deep understanding of\u2014and<\/em> adoration for\u2014the women who dream of wearing his clothes. It’s clear that he loves women: Maxwell knows what they want and more importantly, how<\/em> they want to feel. Utility is built in and versatility is always accounted for; after all, what’s the point of wearing a piece you love just once?<\/p>\n

Clothes are meant to be worn again. Repeated, washed (well, dry cleaned), passed down with love.<\/p>\n

Fall 2022 evoked glamour in its coziest form\u2014a tangible reality that exists in Maxwell’s world. There’s a tenderness to it all (evident in the layering, the rich textures, the romantic drapery) that inspires a heartwarming kind of comfort: the kind you feel when you’re surrounded by the people and things you love most. Maxwell ensconces you in feathery shawls and lets you ease into a maxi of crushed satin. In any other context, those would be the unapproachables; here, they’re meant to be touched. Lived in.<\/p>\n

Imagine Serena van der Woodsen all grown up: she’s softer, a little more sensible (at least from the outside looking in). She would have been the muse.<\/p>\n
