Direct from <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/japanrealtime\/2011\/11\/04\/for-fashions-night-out-anna-takes-tokyo\/\" target=\"_blank\">WSJ&#8217;s blog<\/a>, a few days late (as per usual) is the snippet from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/japanrealtime\/2011\/11\/04\/for-fashions-night-out-anna-takes-tokyo\/\" target=\"_blank\">interview with Anna Wintour on Tokyo&#8217;s Fashion Night Out<\/a> that caught my eye; interviewer Yoree Koh asks Anna Wintour her take on the controversial <em>Vogue<\/em>\u00a0Japan feature of Renho, minister of government revitaliation, in an editorial last year that took place inside Japan&#8217;s Parliament building:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ms. Wintour:<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;When women are in positions of power, and they\u2019re featured in a women\u2019s magazine like Vogue\u2026they tend to be incredibly unfairly criticized. It\u2019s an incredibly old-fashioned approach. Just because you\u2019re in a position of power, and you look good and you enjoy fashion\u2014does that mean you\u2019re an idiot, or that it\u2019s not seemly to be in a woman\u2019s magazine? If a man is in <em>GQ<\/em>, they don\u2019t get the same kind of criticism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amennnn (!).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s all very Elle Woods\u2014being torn between wanting to be recognized as &#8220;serious&#8221; and embracing femininity. We&#8217;ve undertaken a patriarchal view of what it means to be powerful: in order to achieve and gain respect as a leader, one must abandon \u00a0and forsake all aspects of woman-ity and take on masculine definitions of what power <em>looks<\/em>\u00a0like.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The situation also reminds me all too well of Anna Wintour&#8217;s response to ex-Senator (now Secretary of State) Hillary Clinton turning down <em>Vogue&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0request for a photoshoot in 2008 (?):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Imagine my amazement, then, when I learned that Hillary Clinton, our only female presidential hopeful, had decided to steer clear of [being photographed for] our pages at this point in her campaign for <strong>fear of looking too feminine<\/strong>. <strong>The notion that a contemporary woman must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is frankly dismaying<\/strong>. (&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">How has our culture come to this?
