I never quite got into the peplum in the 2010s, but give a woman a decade to digest the shape and eventually, she might open up to the idea of a new silhouette. There were a few reasons why I never participated in the trend\u2014the main being that in my twenties, my style largely centered around the male gaze (something I would’ve vehemently denied at the time but is now a glaring fact)\u2014and that logically, peplums just aren’t the most “flattering” on my body type. Get through one recession, start experiencing life with a fully developed frontal lobe, live through the start of a second recession, and suddenly, a peplum top seems like a good idea. Yes, there’s a decent amount of skin involved with this particular top but it’s intentional\u2014meant to balance all the crinkled frou-frou cream and juxtaposed with an oversized pant.<\/p>\n

Even my scent of evening, Chanel Com\u00e8te<\/em><\/a>, was specifically chosen to dispel attention. Not a lick of vanilla, rose, or anything distinctively girlish or overtly perceivable but rather, soft aldehydes, heliotrope, and a tender musk. It’s pretty, though reserved. Only women and (very few!) discerning men take to it.<\/p>\n

All this to say: I’m alive and well, just otherwise preoccupied writing for Editorialist<\/em><\/a> between projects. So much so it’s a miracle that I, the always-working introvert, managed to go out one night\u2014thus the rare snapshot to remember that I do, in fact, own clothes outside of my day-to-day uniform.<\/p>\n
