Imagine my surprise when an invitation to the Revolve Los Angeles<\/a> launch party, hosted by Bella Hadid<\/a>, landed in my inbox.<\/p>\n

Revolve. Los Angeles. Miss Hadid herself!<\/em> How very L.A., and perhaps the pinnacle of L.A. things I’ve been around yet.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0does<\/em> one wear to something like this? I love a good going-out look as much as the next woman (something I found I can actually enjoy in my thirties; whereas in my twenties, I always felt a little too vulnerable\u2014like prey to straight men). But for events like this where I’m specifically invited as press, I feel compelled to wear a simpler, often monochromatic, look. I’m not talent, and I don’t want (or need) to be perceived in any capacity. And however self-imposed this implicit dress code may be, it’s as much my professional uniform of choice as it is a security blanket. I take comfort in blending into the background, particularly because I attend these affairs solo. Slipping in and tiptoeing out sans disruption is crucial.<\/p>\n

And yet\u2014a show of skin or something flashier seemed necessary for a Revolve<\/em> event. I debated bringing out a Jean Paul Gaultier mesh set, but at the final minute, settled on this all-black, corset-and-trousers combination. I chose the road most traveled and did not regret it.<\/p>\n
