If you could only pick 10 things from your closet to wear for the rest of your life (disregarding aging\/weight loss or gain, we\u2019re being hypothetical here), what would they be? Now, narrow it down to five things. What are those? (If you can\u2019t narrow it down, think: what are the 10 pieces you wear the most?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These then become your wardrobe staples\u2014stick to this foundation and donate whatever else you don\u2019t wear as often (or no longer fit). And the five articles of clothing you picked of the ten? Buy multiples or variations of each, for these are the pieces you know you will always love, gravitate towards, and undoubtedly re-wear. It\u2019s easy to see how materialistic and excessive we&#8217;ve become as a species\u2014how many can relate to the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p6xDPX-gu\" target=\"_blank\">closet-full-of-clothes-but-\u201cnothing-to -wear\u201d<\/a>\u00a0syndrome? I\u2019m actually thoroughly convinced it\u2019s an American phenomenon. Think minimalist. European. French, more specifically. You would think that with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p6xDPX-4d\" target=\"_blank\">Carine Roitfeld\u2019s old\u00a0position as Editor-in-Chief of Paris\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/abitcoquettish.wordpress.com\/2011\/01\/07\/adieu-carine-bonjour-emmanuelle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vogue<\/a><\/em>, she\u2019d have a closet bursting at its hinges. But it\u2019s quite the contrary:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Actually, my mum has never had a lot of clothes, and she has a tiny wardrobe. She knows exactly what she likes to wear. There&#8217;s one long cupboard in her bedroom, and you never see shoes lying anywhere else. I&#8217;ve got more clothes than she has.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2014<em><a href=\"http:\/\/kimberlypearl.co\/blog\/tag\/julia-restoin-roitfeld\" target=\"_blank\">Julia Restoin-Roitfeld<\/a>, on Carine Roitfeld&#8217;s closet<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Invest in classics<\/strong>. Now reference the list of basics the professionals say you should own (<em>e.g.<\/em>: Nina Garcia\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/books\/Little-Black-Book-Style-Nina-Garcia\/?isbn=9780061234903\" target=\"_blank\">The Little Black Book of Style<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/books\/One-Hundred-Nina-Garcia\/?isbn=9780061664618?AA=books_SearchBooks_31960\" target=\"_blank\">The One Hundred<\/a><\/em>, the latter which is beyond excessive\u2014100 is much to many for any wardrobe, in my opinion). Note what you don\u2019t have, and invest in the key items. Classics are timeless, so spending more for the best quality is entirely worth it. Quantity over quality, ladies!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019m\u00a0<em>not<\/em>, however, telling you to invest in every one of those must-haves, however\u00a0<em>must-have<\/em>\u00a0they are. Take the black cigarette pant or trench coat. They\u2019re undoubtedly classic, but may not necessarily fit your aesthetic. The slim pant is chic, but if you\u2019re pear-shaped, skip it and opt for a flared trouser\u2014it\u2019s far more flattering. Trenches are also amongst the ultimate \u201cOne Hundred,\u201d but I\u2019d never wear one: it\u2019s either a leather jacket or a structured winter jacket for me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Keep an inspiration journal<\/strong>. Keep a folder, binder, or notebook of things you like. Need. Whatever inspires you. Tear out clippings from magazines and catalogues, organizing it as such. When you\u2019re in a bit of a style rut, flip through and feel re-sinpired. It\u2019s the perfect way to hone in on your style and aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Make a checklist<\/strong>. Keep a running list of things you need to complete your wardrobe, and be as specific as possible. You want an almond-toe, black leather pump with a \u00bd\u201d platform and 4-inch heel. Put it in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.moleskineus.com\/volant-extra-small-plain.html\" target=\"_blank\">pocket-sized journal<\/a>\u00a0and throw it in your handbag. Do sketch specific pieces, too\u2014you\u2019ll better remember what it was exactly you were on a mission for and prevent you from straying from that direction (all the while improving artistic skills, of course). Checklists will, again, help you focus on\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0develop your style and curb impulse buys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>On my list<\/em>: Rose gold and silver\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallcombe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Smallcombe<\/a>\u00a0bangles, black leather ballerinas, the aforementioned heels, black srappy platform heels which I can dance in (this is crucial), and a great black everyday bag in leather.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">See? I don\u2019t need much.\u00a0<em>You<\/em>\u00a0don\u2019t need much.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Whenever I meet a girl with truly gret style I immediately want to be her friend, because I can safely assume that she is confident and well-knowledgeable.
