Bag Whore: Fendi Chameleon Satchel

I adore Fendi.

I first fell in major like when I saw the Fendi Spy—there wasn’t one variation I didn’t like (a rare feat), their logo-emblazoned one inclusive (an even rarer feat). It was the first designer bag I ever loved, and we all know how it is with first loves. You get attached to anything that reminds you of them.

I haven’t kept up with Fendi’s bags, however. Besides the renowned Peek-a-boo—which I think is far more beautiful than the Hermès Birkin—and a few, canvas baguettes in  summery, ombré colors, I haven’t been the house’s biggest fan. Somewhere along the line Fendi (bags, that is) went from unbelievably unique yet retaining classic elegance to… tacky. It became pervasive.

But somewhere along the line it became so overdone it became chic again. Does that make sense? It did in my head—but because I don’t see pretentious hipsters toting around Fendi bags, the brand has become all the more attractive. Nor has it become some ubiquitous “it” bag (which may or may not be the same thing as the aforementioned) – another major plus.

The fact is, Fendi’s leather bags are well-made. I’ve fantasized over the idea of owning a beautiful, well-made bag and wearing it to death. Literally. There’s something so romantic  and elegant about becoming so attached and reliant on just one handbag until it falls apart—it becomes lived in. It becomes a part of you, and integral and crucial element of your personal aesthetic…

Fendi’s latests are blowing me away—the “Chameleon” being one of the house’s greatest pieces in their colorblocked collection yet—a classic redone and modernized. The “Chameleon” is sensual. A strange, intangible concept to describe a handbag (of all things), yes, but no other word comes to mind. It’s curvaceous.   L a n g u i d  .  Feigning insouciance when in fact it’s silhouette is structured just enough to give it shape rather than rigidity. It’s all about the illusion, with panels colored and stitched to allude to feminine curves when it’s but a basic, rectangular bag.

Ingenious, really.

There are a few color combinations, but the only one that has me in lust is the one pictured above – a soft palette of nude, beige and taupe that easily takes you into fall/winter but fits into your spring/summer wardrobe. It’s a beauty, an undoubtedly timeless  handbag worth the investment, for sure.
