“The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural.”
So Calvin Klein said. And so, stereotypically, a quote Parisian women are said to live by. I honestly have no idea about the validity of this statement; though I do know that makeup is made to enhance one’s beauty.
I write this with a just-applied face mask – yes, the typical, thickly pasted minty things you see in comedies where women accidentally bump into the love of their lives encased by the frightening facial mask and consequently scare off the poor man – the minty tingling rather refreshing. What a pretty sight, non? I am pretty sure I just defeated the whole purpose of blogging, where one can type away in uncoordinated sweatpants & some baggy old tee in the early morning and still seem fabulous. Rest assured, I am not in such an ensemble, considering that I only own two pairs of sweatpants and both are worn strictly for the usage of dance. But imagining me in a mint green facial mask makes me more human, I suppose.
I adore your blog! I stumbled across it trying to find a perfect date outfit (one of your posts) and have been reading it since! I was wondering, because you’re great at finding the right look for any occasion, what’s your idea of the perfect day makeup? What does your daily beauty routine consist of?
Thanks! – Linda
Speaking of beauty products. A couple of readers, like lovely Ms. Linda have asked me about beauty products I use and would recommend, after reading about my makeup suggestions in posts like this & this, where I’ve included a little blurb about what looks go with what outfit. I shall make a disclaimer here, as loud and clear as size ten or twelve point Georgia font allows me to. I am no makeup guru or expert, simply a lover of adorable pots and tubes of colorful cosmetics, who, ironically, never wears makeup on a daily basis. The only form of makeup I actually use are some sort of lipgloss or lip balm (lipstick for special occasions) and nail polish. The only other experience I’ve had with using actual makeup is for dance performances (and unless you wish to look like you have five pounds of stuff on your face…). Though I must admit that I’m quite good at doing variations of the smokey eye or winged liner.
And yet I have an overabundance of cosmetics sitting on my vanity, most of which are either gifts or free samples from my aunt. I usually end up saving them for special occasions, but they are quite fun to play around with. So here are my favorites products and suggestions:
My Daily Beauty Routine
It really is quite boring, honestly. I do wish I had the time and patience to develop some sort of a fabulous beauty regimen, but to be frank, I really am just too lazy!
1. I wash my face with whatever cleanser I happen to have sitting nonchalantly on my bathroom sink. Usually it’s some variation of drugstore brands. Neutrogena or something of the sort. Any suggestions?
2. Straighten the hair. Sometimes, if my hair cooperates with the weather (or vice versa?) I’ll leave it in it’s natural state, which ranges from having awkward waves to full-on waviness. Once again, however, laziness kicks in and I have no patience to do my hair beyond five minutes. I run my fingers through it once, no brush, tousle it a bit, and leave it down. My hair is barely up!
3. Before I go to bed, I apply many layers of chapstick on my lips. I wake up with soft, kissable ones! In the morning, I simply put on a coat of vaseline and lipgloss. Favorite ones at the moment: Lotta Colada (5 for $20!, Victoria’s Secret Beauty Rush) & C.O. Bigelow Gloss in Plum Mint (on sale for $5, Bath & Body Works).
4. Curl the lashes, and coat them with vaseline (my little secret 😉 no makeup involved!) <- That was perhaps the most gratifying of the four little parts of my routine.
And the kisses of approval go to…
I absolutely adore Victoria’s Secret. So it really is no surprise that I am in love with their beauty products. VS offers the most deliciously sexy of scents, creams, butters, and colors. And so I must say that these few products pass with flying colors (as the cliche goes).
Dream Angel’s Heavenly Eau de Parfum Spray ($39 – $59) is my favorite perfume of all time; the bottle is so simple and elegant, classic and sleek in it’s design. A sensual blend of smooth white peony, soft vanilla and creamy sandalwood, its topnotes consist of quince and cardamom; middle notes are white peony and freesia; and finally, the ever lasting low notes are a incredibly alluring melange of white musk, sandalwood, and vanilla. Oh this perfume does wonders! The boys like it, so I’ve been told!
Beauty Rush Lip Gloss in Lotta Colada (2/$12 or 4/$20) is a part of my new haul and a favorite color. Not only is the flavor ridiculously delicious (pucker up for the boys, darlings!), but the color is gorgeous! From the tube, it seems to be a coral-ish nude shade; once applied, it is the same shade, only a bit more neutral for a seductive pout.
Pink Lip Butter in Ripe ($8) is a new product from Pink’s organic beauty collection. To be honest, I didn’t buy this for its organic shea & cocoa butter recipe; it simply smells refreshing and delicious, the grapefruit scent and color beautiful. A great formula for dry lips or just to add a hint of color!
Chanel Teint Innocence ($47): Definitely worthy of your investment! Perhaps one of the best things bestowed upon womankind by the ever amazing Chanel gods. Luminous, beautiful, & does wonders. Nothing more to say, but simply to buy it!
Rimmel Kajal Eye Pencil in Jet Black ($2): At your local drugstore! Ridiculously cheap and the most amazing soft kohl liner. Perfect for winged liner and smokey eye. I love a good find!
Estee Lauder Mascara ($18 – $32): Estee Lauder was my first mascara – and the only I’ve used since the first tube I received from my aunt. I have very thin lashes, and yet, it never clumps! The navy blue and gold tube is aesthetically appealing too.
Eyelash Curler: Mine is a $5 one, by Revlon. Sure, it may not be the best out there, but it does its job! If a $5 product has the same functions and results as a $20+ one, the former is for me, darlings!
Peggy Sage Creme Reparatrice: I have no idea where to buy this miraculous lotion, nor how much it is. It was part of the haul that my beauty editor aunt sent over. It. Is. Amazing. It is the one lotion that truly does all it claims to do; with one application the skin is buttery smooth & soft. Like a baby’s bottom. I shall make a non sequitor arugment is saying that it is fabulous because it is Parisian. =]
Aveda Elements Spray: A milky color but light consistency, a spritz of it into undone hair gives it a beautiful finishing touch and and makes it a bit more piece-y.
And an everyday beauty look…
Once again, I must reiterate that I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis; but here are the beauty looks I would wear, if I was not lazy! =]
Liner on the top & bottom (I rarely do bottom though) in black, a dusting of beige/brown shadow around the eye, a coat or two of mascara, a bit of light pink blush, and a coat of neutral gloss!
P.S.: Yes, I actually do have a bright green facial mask on, one that is restricting any movement of muscles as it cakes, resulting in this statue-esque like face with moving eyes. And no, I did not simply make that up for the sake of opening up the post with a sad attempt at humor. 🙂
xoxo,
La C.
P.S.: Thank you, Petit-Cheri, for awarding me with the “Your Blog is Fabulous” award! =]

For natural beauty, I too, resort to make up 😛
I’m a big of Neutrogena facewash too, Garnier cream for my face, and, if nothing else, Rimmel mascara and concealer

Congrats on the award! You deserve it, as usual.
Coco Rocha looks STUNNING in those two photos! As does that lady in the fur!
This is so interesting, reading into your beauty regime. Somehow, this is what I thought you’d be like! Minimal, classic, & chic. I love how humble you are! That makes you & proves that you are all the more fab!

I am so envious of women who don’t feel the need to wear makeup! Your taste in foundations is great- Chanel makes some of the best foundations I’ve ever tried. I also love Neutrogena clear pore cleanser/mask. It’s a really nice face wash.

I also love to have soft kissable lips 😉 I always carry chapstick in my purse and vaseline by my bed! 🙂

Johanna: Haha; perhaps, someday you will see me!
Mademoiselle Chic: I too always have chapstick/pink’s lip butter in my purse & vaseline on my night stand!! =]

What a lovely post, this was so fun to read~ I love reading about makeup and recommendation and I especially from someone I look up to! So this was simply amazing. I think I’ve used half my life looking for the perfect mascara and so on so I will try some of these products the next time I have money<3 My makeup has a huge tendency of smudging on me xD
Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog! *blush* I would love to have the song by email, thank you so much! You are the kindest!

i’ve loved reading this post as i’m a bit of a beauty junkie! thanks for sharing your secrets 😉

I totally agree with your everyday beauty tips. The best way to get a natural makeup look, is to have clear skin so you need a great facial routine. Lately, I’ve been loving the sculpted look as seen at Thakoon – so gorgeous and perfect for transitioning into summer! (Yes, I’m looking way too far ahead)
Linhh says
yayyy for your beauty entry!! I basically use many of the same products that you use..why are we so coincidentally alike?? I use Neutrogena cream face wash, it was the ONLY cleanser that worked for me, cheap & effective= perfect. I alsooo loooove Victoria’s secret lotions, cremes, and perfumes. I have the same exact scent that you use and many of their glosses. Their packaging is SUPERBB!! You just can’t go wrong with VS. That Chanel luminous fluid is calling to mee..lol I want to give it a try!
Much <33,

Such a cute post…I am also too lazy to spend too much time on make up. Usually, just mascara and blush…and I definately agree about the Chanel, most of my make up is from it and is definately worth the money. Chanel and YSL mascara…
lisa says
Fantastic post! I usually do mascara, lip balm, and SPF moisturizer, or if I do makeup it’s very light (a bit of highlighter, concealer, blush, and pearly pink eyeshadow)–nothing super obvious. In fact, today I was talking to a male colleague about redeeming a $50 gift card I received for Arbonne cosmetics, and he said, “You wear that stuff?”
I said, “I’m wearing it right now…”
He peered at my face closely and said, “You don’t look like you’re wearing anything.”
So yeah, I definitely agree with the whole “It takes makeup to look natural” statement. 😉
miranda says
haha it’s quite ironic that we use makeup to “look natural”
but i suppose it’s true when you think about it
and no worries love
those facial masks are wonderful 🙂
Brigadeiro says
Loved this post! Must try Chanel Teint Innocence (is that a foundation? I love love love Armani’s Fabric Face Foundation, perfect for those who don’t or hardly wear makeup, so natural & light).
Cleanser recommendations? I love Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing gel (and before this I also only used whatever drugstore cleanser someone in my household would buy, before my wedding I ‘splurged’ on this and haven’t looked back).
My other ‘holy grails’:
*Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant (love this even more than the special cleansing gel)
*NARS blush in Orgasm
*Mascara (I have short asian lashes, so can’t live without it, I love Shu Uemura’s Fibre Xtension)
🙂
La Couturier says
Marta: Thanks darling! And it is definitely worth it to invest! Since I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis, I spend it on Chanel nail polish =]!
Lisa: Haha! Your makeup always looks immaculately done but natural! So many women strive for that, but it’s hard: you’ve definitely achieved it then!
Miranda: I know, isn’t it ironic? Haha facial masks are wonderfully fun!
Brigadeiro: Chanel Teint Innocence is a liquid foundation – it does wonders in covering up any spots! Oh, I must try that then, thanks for all of the suggestions! =] I will most definitely be trying them out ASAP! =]

I have only been wearing foundation over the last 5 years. Before I would go natural (no foundation). But when I hit forty I started wearing more makeup. Then I noticed my skin started changing and not for the better. I realize I was aging but my skin was not looking at healthy. So I have decided to go with all organic, 100% natural beauty products. I think this is really critical as women start to age. I’m not using my Mac products anymore and I started using this pure shea butter moisturizer, organic mascara and fruit pigmented lip gloss and I have already noticed a big different. I no longer wear foundation. I only just gloss, mascara and little eye shadow! Thats it! Can’t get more natural then that. I gotta protect my skin, especially at 45!
Princessimp. says
Haha, I love your beauty post! I too hardly ever wear makeup, but my most have item is lipgloss or lipbalm. Yet I can’t stop buying beauty items and most of them are sitting in my bathroom unused, simply because of their beautiful packaging!

-I love that quote at the top.
-I too cannot go to bed without vigorously applying chapstick. Seriously if I don’t I wake up in the middle of the night bothered by my dry lips.
-You are so tempting me with that Chanel Teint.
-Love this post, darlin. Thanks for putting in so much time and effort.

I like your picks and completely agree with that chapstick rule–it really is the solution to perfectly kissable lips!

great tips ! i use vaseline on my eyelashes too. i hate the idea of cleaning off mascara off my lashes so vaseline is the best substitute ever. loves it.
Trisch says
Great post – I love your beauty routine, I wish mine was so simple! I put on moisturizer then a bit of blush a tad darker than my skintone, top layer of eyeliner, eyeshadow in browns, mascarra and a light pink lipgloss. It seems like a lot but it’s under 10 minutes 🙂

Darling, I just love stopping by your blog – you write so beautifully and always have fantastic advice!
I just LOVE C.O. Bigelow… it’s my favorite lip gloss ever! I’ve never tried Plum Mint though, I’ll have to stop by and pick some up 🙂
I agree with Mr. Klein about how it takes makeup to look natural…I usually don’t wear much makeup, but if I was to wear none it would not be a pretty sight 😉
Great post, darling! (As always).

Darling, In my half-awake state of blogging this morning, I forgot to reference your page among others referenced (forgive me?). I adore your page, and will give you the full referral due soon, I promise.
As far as your daily routine, you are right to start out casually, with whatever strikes your fancy. Try lemon juice & sugar sometime (with eyes closed tight), for refreshingly clean and exfoliated skin. Or just a swipe of witch hazel on a cotton ball is good if you are in a hurry (it’s healing and moisturizing).
Night time is much more serious, as your body does most of it’s healing when you sleep. Light facial massage with a good moisturizer is key. I loved all of your tips, good show! xo

Yey! I love your beauty rutine. I agree that if we lazy ones could find more time in the morning…that would be great!

Hello La C. What a cool post. I really enjoyed it. I had never heard of anyone doing a blog post with a facial mask on, but it’s neat to know it can be done. I think it was interesting to read all your tips for women on wearing makeup. Some great ideas. You do have a fascinating blog. Cheers!

As always, fabulous post! And thanks for the comments :]
As for a cleanser, I would recommend any cleanser, or any product for that matter, from Kiehl’s. Everything of theirs that I have tried has worked great! Oh, or Lush, all of their products are so cute and worth the price. Plus, they have the most adorable bath bombs.

Laur: Thanks love! I adore Kiehl’s – best lotions ever, hands down! I’ve never tried Lush! Perhaps I will, at your suggestion!
Issa: Vaseline simply eliminates any clumpiness that mascara usually brings. Less chemicals too ;]. It just makes them glossier & seem longer! If you curl your lashes first, that should do the trick!
Mimi: Awww; thanks! You’re the sweetest!
Kaila: Thank you!! I’d love to!

I like that line: The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural.
I guess it is true for the majority of women.
