Designer Spotlight: Alice + Olivia

4 August 2008 • Kimberly • Leave a Comment

As I was browsing through shopbop.com (again) just to pass time, I came across their collection of Alice + Olivia – and was quite impressed! They have lovely dresses and minis, executing simplicity at its best: solid fabrics adorned with rosettes, pleating, or beading, the minimalistic details enough and never overdone.

Launched in 2002, the label Alice + Olivia was conceived from designer Stacey Bendet’s desire to create the perfect pair of flattering and form-fitting pants. Her signature style immediately succeeded; and “Stacey Pants” became the must-have staple and denim alternative for today’s “retro sophisticate”. The brand expanded with a cashmere collection in 2003 and then a full collection in 2005, turning Alice + Olivia into the ultimate brand for pieces of vintage style with a contemporary twist.

I love the spring feel of Alice + Oliva’s pink, Rose Halter Dress. Made of silk, this darling little dress with rosette detailing at the neck is perfect for a day party or cocktail hour with the girls. I confess, I don’t think I would have an occasion to wear this dress, being that I have school during the day, and I prefer iced tea to cocktails. But I would most definitely throw a little garden party just to wear this number. Their Trapeze Pleat Bottom dress in white (available exclusively at shopbop!) is just lovely as well! The lightness of the silk with minimal detailing – the ruching at the neckline and layered ruffle trim at the bottom – makes a more casual mini. The trapeze silouhette is a favorite of mine; it’s fun, its flirty, and it’s the sexiness sans the uncomfortable-ness. Alice + Olivia’s Wide Waistband Skinny Pant, available in charcoal and black, is a wardrobe staple! I love the clean look of the pant combined with the popular skinny fit; its professional modernized. Make it professional chic with the classic dress shirt, or wear it with a fun tee-shirt for a polished, casual look (an alternative to jeans + top). Grab your pumps and a fabulous bag and you are ready to go!

“Clothes always make girls happy.” – Stacey Bendet
