God Save McQueen

13 September 2009 • Kimberly • Leave a Comment

I never considered myself an Alexander McQueen girl.

Nor would I ever, for that matter. Too prissy, perhaps, or arguably a wimp when faced with the (literally) dead-set eyes of his infamous skulls. Yet somehow, in the midst of my anti-skulls platform during the raging skulls trend back in the day, I have always had my heart set on owning the classic, Alexander McQueen scarf.

Alexander McQueen Scarves

{black & ivory silk chiffon scarf, $260 // rose wool-blend scarf, $455}

Note that I stress  c l a s s i c  – I am forever fond of pieces deemed classic (in my book, of course). By classic they must meet the following requirements: iconic, versatile, and ageless. I do believe Mr. Mcqueen’s iconic skull-print scarves are exactly that and no less, for its ability to transform any ensemble from simply blah to dark, gothic, and edgy is undeniable.

Whereas I’m not too fond of Mcqueen’s ready-to-wear lines, his shoes truly are worthy of shoe pornography status.

Alexander McQueen Shoes

{shoes from  a l e x a n d e r m c q u e e n . c o m }

Feast your eyes out, darlings. The black Swarovski encrusted pumps? A sophisticated silhouette turned punk-rock; it is quite strange how black crystals instantly change the entire look of an item (or shoe, in this case) – part unusual, part sophisticated, part rock-chic. Le sigh.

bisous xx

    The studded booties and the Swarovski pumps? I am slowly dying for them. And all in black of course, which is THE iconic, timeless and versatile colour.
    Darling, I am sorry I didn’t comment or blog for a few weeks, as I was on holidays with my family on the French Riviera, eating croissants everyday 😉 But I’m now back to London, ready for LFW, and wearing my new Chloé coat with slouched heeled boots – but no tights so I can at least show my suntan a little! – to face the ever-too-soon autumn! Verdict, dear Stylista?
    With love, Alizé x

    McQueen has so many beautiful classic pieces – really, I think some of his items are going to be the ones our generation pass on to our grandchildren! Top of my wishlist from him is this clutch:

    i feel like i struggle with studs and/or skulls and things of the like, mostly because i feel like no matter how i style them, i come off like i’m trying terribly hard to be edgy but the faithful bootie has just the right amounts of edginess and simplicity. too bad the price is beyond my means to say the least.

    Shoe porn! I love the peep toe pumps, they could be worn with a casual outfit or something a bit more elegant and still look great.

    The skull scarf was worn by pretty much everyone but it’s still amazing! Beautiful piece.

    mcqueen, mcqueen, i dont know what to say, sometimes i LOVE him sometimes i dont. i was really disappointed with the quality of his novak bags the 1st time i saw one. i think his clothes are really the stand out pieces. his does phenomenal dresses. his suits the construction is excellent, a note to his saville row training.

    the scarves, unfortunately all i think of his the little girl LA starlets. it’s a shame, they ruin everything.

    I’m actually a true McQueen girl and I love his designs, including his RTW line… if you go beyond his extravagant runway shows, few other designers have such talent for impeccable tailoring as he does (let’s not forget that he did train at Savile Row) and his giant houndstooth items are already being copied all over the place. The skull items, including scarves are a definite classic… if you’re the type of girl who likes the rock look. When worn with anything else (i.e. if it’s not ‘you’) it might look a bit contrived, which is why I understand why some girls think the skulls look isn’t for them. But this look is timeless in the same way Chanel is. It’s just not for everyone (i.e. I’d look seriously out of place if I wore Hermes).
