It’s Time to Bring Out the Pretty Bras

11 May 2010 • Kimberly • Leave a Comment

It’s quite controversial, the entire ooh-là-là-darling-I-can-see-your-bra! trend. Is it simply progressive fashion, an avant-garde means of incorporating demure sexiness into everyday wear, and a means of economizing [when air conditioning is much too expensive in the coming summer]? Or is it too much, borderline trampy and more suitable for, er, less respectable professions? Hm.

Take a look at Exhibit A. The stunning Gisele Bündchen, at some ubiquitous airport, making all us other regular folk look (and feel) absolutely crappy whilst waiting in the terminal for our flights (but no fear, I do have a guide for jet-setting fabulously and comfortably!). Now the ensemble in question: is, or is not the visibility of the lingerie too trendy?

I do think she wears semi-transparency rather lovely. Granted, she is Gisele, meaning she has the ability to even the most ridiculous of UFT (unidentified fashion-forward things), but let’s not forget she’s human (’tis true, my dears). The top in question is not only sheer, but also fitted; usually too much sexy in one becomes, erm, trampy. I probably would have opted for a pair of high waisted skinnies, a mini, or, even better yet, trousers rolled at the ankle, to minimize the oh-là-là factor. But the messy hair and touches of grunge—the belt and worn engineer boots—do balance it quite well.

Let’s turn our attention to Exhibit B, showcasing the darling Emma Roberts. I’m a huge fan of her Unfabulous days (go ahead, laugh), and probably not much else. She’s grown up—clearly—and I do applaud her for her balance of sexy and chic. A sheer, v-neck top in a sophisticated taupe does help in elevating the overall look. Now, when tucked into a loose pair of trousers, the end result is mature and elegant, underwhelming the sheer visibility (pun intended) of the lingerie. I quite like it.

Though I do wish she had worn a black bra instead of hot pink.

Exhibit C. Behold, my favorite take on the trend. She looks elegant, chic, and edgy all at once. Under different circumstances, lace practically screams lingerie, yet somehow it works.Yes, lace is quite suggestive, but when in the silhouette of your average crew-neck tee, it becomes wearable. Tuck the shirt into pants to balance the skin shown, et voilà! We have ourselves the perfect ensemble for an evening out with the ladies: sexy, but hardly over the top. Drinks all around, eh?

The final verdict on the trend? I’m never too fond of trends, sometimes just because everyone else seems to like it. But I do quite like this particular one, when worn right. It’s time to rummage the drawers to bring out the pretty bras, darlings…

Your thoughts? Yay or nay?

♥

bisous,

La C.

I can’t help but find the look tacky, cheap and obvious, no matter how it is done. gisele looks best because it looks effortless and almost accidental (probably was due to paparazzi flash, more than actual sheerness) but the other two look like they’re trying so hard to be sexy. i’m not prim and prude by any means, but i’d rather keep my bra under wraps…

I think the last one is the best!!! The lace detail is gorgeous, and the black bra is nice too! I normally hate the black bra peeping through like Gisele’s outfit, but it IS Gisele, and it looks fantastic on her. However, Emma Roberts is all nay!! It just looks like a mistake =)

While I like the peach color on Emma, the pink bra is so wrong and what’s up with those pants?? I prefer the look of no-nonsense skinnies with this trend and I think Gisele and the last girl did it perfectly, balancing sexy and classy, with a touch of edge.

i actually love gisele’s photo! it looks casual enough to come off as natural and pure, therefore classy. emma’s pushup look like she’s just trying to throw herself at you, so it just falls into the “please put your clothes back on” category.

    just my thoughtssss. 🙂

To all: Love love love all your opinions, it’s what makes the blogosphere go ’round [so long as you aren’t mean! (;] And Lauren, oh gosh, the push-up bra scares me! If only it was a plain black bra…

      bisous, xx

I like this trend, though I have a feeling wearing it I might receive some backlash from . . . everyone.

I actually have grown fond of this trend. When worn right, you don’t look a tramp. But, you still have to watch what you wear with it, because it could be a fashion mistake rather than fashion victory. I agree with wishing Emma Roberts wearing the hot pink bra; she really should have worn a black one. Lace and sheer tops go perfectly with the visible bras. <3

I love the Gisele way, I did it a lot lately with a simple grey men t-shirt, it’s not vulgar at all and gives you a special plus, everyone should do that ;D

It’s a trend that can work – as Gisele proves perfectly – but only if every other element of the ensemble is demure or unassuming.

For me, Emma Roberts wanders dangerously close to trampy territory because her bra is a little too up and at ’em. A simple nude bra, to match the hue of her cardigan, would have looked sophisticated and not have screamed ‘Look at my Cleavage’…

    Wonderful post x
