Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

23 December 2008 • Kimberly • Leave a Comment

Oh the weather outside is frightful…

Or, perhaps, not too frightful (in my case), but with little flurries here or there, snowfall that seems to snow-globe-worthy but dies out into yucky rain. In any case, cold weather calls for proper weather gear. And though we would all love to continue wearing our chic opaque tights/sweater dress/cute boots/little pea coat ensembles, those type of outfits usually end with consequences. i.e.: colds, shivering uncontrollably, etc. Nor do we want to look like an Eskimo, with furry hats, UGG boots, and a huge winter jacket.

Thus said, it is very important to invest in key essentials for the winter. Wool and leather materials are probably most suitable for this time of year, providing adequate warmth whilst remaining chic and sharp. A long wool trench or peacoat would be warmer than the average hip-length cold, keeping your legs warm. Jeans are definitely a must as well; but if you still get cold easily, wear a pair of leggings underneath your pants: weird, yes, but no one will ever know. Leather boots are a yet another must for cold weather. Knee-highs cover more areas susceptible to the cold, and leather is waterproof. Stilettos and heels are perfectly fine for those plain old, gusty days, but when there’s ice out, please do lower the heel. Wedges would be more practical!

And now the accessories. My outerwear color palette always consists of two colors: either black and cream, or gray and black. It gives the best overall effect and keeps the ensemble very chic and streamlined. The coat and boots should be the same color, and the accessories (hat, gloves, scarves, bags) should be of another color. A wool beret or beanie is a must; not only does it keep your hair from flailing wildly about your face and sticking to the lipgloss (oh the horror) whenever a winter gale hits, but it also, obviously, keeps your head warm. It’s also quite the chic addition to any outfit. Leather gloves are a must! I love the Miu Miu ones below; and if you are like myself and are not willing to part with the hundred-something dollars, DIY them! Glue on large rhinestones securely to the leather gloves where ever you’d like, and voila! And last, but not least. The bag. A leather bag is most practical for winter, since the material is able to endure spontaneous bursts of snowfall, hail, or sleet.

In other news, darlings…

4th-award-from-petra         5th-award-from-petra

The lovely Petra awarded me with not one, but two awards, saying “this blog amazes me. Beautiful posts such as “Things to Love Thursday” and “Why Don’t You…” make me appreciate so much that she shares her love of life with us. Thank you thank you!”. On the contrary, thank you. I always love her outfit posts; she is just one gorgeous girl!

I just received my giveaway loot today, courtesy of Brooke of Getcha Nails Did; I’m very much excited to try them out, since nail polish is one of my guilty pleasures! I particularly love the Sally Hansen Salon Manicure Kit in the Deep Collection chock full of mini bottles of dark colors (my obsession as of now) including a fabulous metallic-y brown-red, navy, deep red, and burgundy. She was also kind enough to include a few other bottles: Maybelline Colorama Topcoat #23 (Orange-y with glitter), Sinful Colors in San Francisco (a dark, sophisticated green… different from the color palette I usually stick to, but nonetheless, fun to experiment!), and Wet ‘N Wild Kaleidoscope (a fabulous, silver polish that is pure glitter). Thanks, darling! I’ll have fun trying them out!

xoxo,

La C.

Congratulations on the awards! I like your recommendation about keeping the outerwear palette simple with cream/gray/black. I like to do the same but add a jolt of colour like with this outfit here.

Today, I walked around the city in below freezing temperatures for about 3 or 4 hours… OF COURSE, I forgot my gloves and a hat. But for real, cashmere is one of the best materials to wear in the cold. I find it much warmer than wool, but I’m not sure if that’s actually the case (I mean scientifically). My guess is that cashmere, since it’s softer, is more moldable to the body, thus it keeps heat in…

My general palette seems to be neutrals as well, but more like blue/brown, black/gray. I don’t seem to wear cream that often, but I do love the color — it looks good on most people!

    I’ll stop rambling now 🙂

I find myself collecting a ridiculous amount of berets and beanies in the winter. I think hats are often neglected in winter wear, but I love them so!
Love the black and cream palette 🙂

    oh my god
we have exactly the same views about “strategic yet chic” clothing in winter, especially concerning colors.
this is my first winter in my whole life and i had a hard time finding the right clothing, i didn’t ant to end up like an eskimo as u said, and through your post i get the feeling we have similar tastes.

well Merry Christmas and enjoy the cold
