Girly isn’t quite in my style vocabulary. I don’t think it ever was, even as a little girl. Cute, perhaps, but the phase was short-lived. By the time my parents recognized my autonomy, I was already quite serious—sartorially and otherwise. They let me choose my outfit for Picture Day as early as first or second grade, and of all the princess-y things a child is bombarded with, I chose a rather sophisticated sleeveless turtleneck from DKNY, colorblocked in white, red, and black. (Even if I weren’t near-sighted, I probably would’ve opted for the glasses, too.)

I’ve been quite sound in my style since, but I do have the occasional urge to dabble in the dainty and whimsical. Life is too short not to experiment, no matter how resolute my personal taste. So before I shelved Little Miss Dior back into her dustbag and into my closet, I decided to lean into the lady of it all.

Few things beat a vintage Christian Dior slip dress (or Victoria’s Secret nightie, circa 1980s through 1990s). I found this one on Depop nearly 10 years ago, and while I typically reserve this nightgown for lounging at home—as it was intended—it’s thick enough to wear out without fear of a sheer slip-up. I’m astounded by how it still fits like a glove, no matter how my body has changed over time. But because I’m still quite reserved in some aspects (no doubt affected by American public school dress codes for girls that demonized the camisole strap!), I couldn’t venture out in daylight without some sort of cover-up. The once-viral Simonett bolero may have fallen out of favor, but I still reach for it often: It gives the perfect amount of coverage (for comfort, warmth, and modesty), and has a weightiness that juxtaposes the delicate. There’s just enough contrast so something girly can still feel like me.

As for the perfume, a summer favorite: Chambre52 Contre Ta Peau, which is this airy, orange blossom and vanilla musk that kisses skin with warmth and sweetness. I’ve written about it a handful of times over at Editorialist because I love it so; it truly is one of the sexiest floral perfumes in my repertoire.
