Maintenant | No. 009

Main·te·nant, adverb. Of the French language, meaning “now,” “at the moment,” and perfectly suitable for a[n American] culture which thrives upon this idea of instant gratification and living for now, for better or for worse. Live for the present and appreciate everything of the moment can easily become something where we become apathetic towards anything that doesn’t affect us. Read: the environment, patching up the economy/Social Security issues, etc. We let it be. If it’s not hurting us, why bother?

I digress. I started this little series way back for La Couturier, and decided to bring it back due to the positive response I received after its commencement. In short it’s like a comprehensive form of Twitter; whatever ramblings and updates on my life, my current obsessions, things I love, stuff I dub noteworthy. Here’s to the now, maintenant.

Illustrated by Dany Roberts

  • I’m currently home for Thanksgiving break, sprawled across my bed with cup of green tea, my Macbook, my mobile, and the DVDs of my favorite, cliché dance movies playing. All the while writing. But as nice as it is to sleep in my own bed and have my car at my perusal to make me feel less caged within the bubble of college life (ironic, isn’t it, and I’m at a massive university…), I’m going to miss the independence I have at college. Already missing it, and it’s only been five hours since I left. Looking forward to Sunday…
  • Recently made the switch to Bare Escentuals Mineral Makeup at the recommendation of my roommate, and I’m in love. Apparently it’s one of those love-hate things, with no in-betweens; I’d suggest you all to try it though! I used to be a liquid foundation girl—Revlon’s Colorstay offered fantastic coverage, finishing texture, and lasting power for my 14-hour days or nights of dancing in sweaty crowds—and never thought I’d get used to mineral makeup. I. Love. It. My skin’s improved drastically since (I have oily/combination skin), the coverage is excellent, and the finish is so natural.
  • I think I’ve put together (and found!) one of the best party playlists. Club music, house, and, of course, R&B Hip-hop. I’m always in the mood to dance, if you can’t tell already…
  • And for the Quote du Jour:

“A literate woman is sharpened like a sword.”

— from an ancient Greek school notebook (P.Sorb.826)
