No Whites After Labor Day?

3 September 2011 • Kimberly • Leave a Comment

It’s no surprise that such (ridiculous) rule of so-called “etiquette” had arisen as a means of “insiders trying keep other people out and outsiders trying to climb in by proving they know the rules.”

Rules were meant to be broken, anyhow. And has anyone heard of the white button-down—a supposed classic? We’re not, however, playing I-spy-hypocrisy-in-fashion (although it’d be an entertaining game). But speaking of white shirts: yes, they are one of the fundamentals in any wardrobe as well as the ultimate transitional piece from summer into fall.

Not to mention, they accentuate a (fading tan) and never fail to make you look that much more put together. They’re essentially the top equivalent of blue jeans: sophistication and demure sex appeal sans the effort, perfect for the lazy girl who’s not quite lazy enough to reach for her yoga pants and UGGs just yet.

There’s the crisp white shirt for work. The semi-sheer, floaty blouse with balloon sleeves. The romantic, ruffly version slightly reminiscent of the Victorian. Classic, Peter Pan or simply no collars at all. Options are endless, so there are no excuses: a style exists for everyone, even for those with unconventional leanings.

Paired with the tailored black pant for work, black denim for a night out, blue denim for everyday, tucked into skirts… the list goes on. Feeling chilly? Add a fitted little blazer. Wanting to channel Michelle Obama? Slip into a cardigan. And for the days we want to be in touch with our inner bad girl, shimmy into a leather jacket. Shimmying is optional, of course, but trust—it’s far more fun that way. Ray-Ban aviators, body-con skirt and ankle boots and we’re reading to hop onto Harley Davidsons.

If only.

But since pictures speak louder than words, a dose of sartorial sweetness for your perusal:

No whites after Labor Day? Please.

I never agreed with that silly rule, and the all-white outfit above deserves to be worn during every season!

One of the things that are “missing” from my wardrobe. It is on the list!

I’ve been obsessed with Equipment’s signature blouses for the longest time. I think it’s about time to splurge on one in natural white.

Random side-note: Didn’t even know about the rule until I saw this one episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I’m rather fond of creamy colors in the fall and winter (they coordinate well with my dark brown Frye boots). *Kanye shrugs* At any rate, glad you approve. 🙂

I don’t live in the states, but that sounds like a silly rule, but luckily it doesn’t apply to me 🙂 But if you wear if like the girl in the second picture, how can that ever be a crime?

I own the cutest white pea coat. I can’t wait to wear it again this fall.

[…] I’ve been secretly coveting a Nancy Gonzales since the Bag Snob girls have been covering the brand. It’s almost too classic for a girl my age still in school, but for a woman well into her late twenties and early thirties, it’s a good milestone piece to own. This particular collection, however, is more suited for a younger audience. It’s the matte white crocodile skin, serving as each of the ten artist’s canvas (literally), that gives the brand a revival of youth. It’s edgier than Gonzales’ venture into bright-colored skins, proving that (yet again), simplicity is king, and that white after Labor Day is always acceptable. […]
