Bag Whore: Proenza Schouler PS1

23 February 2009 • Kimberly • Leave a Comment

In an environment outside of the fashion [blogging] world, mentioning the “PS1” would cause eyebrow-raising stares from random strangers who think you must live in the Stone Age for somehow missing the fact that the Playstation 3 had already come out. But no, we are not that oblivious to the gaming/electronics!

ps1

Although I can safely say that my personal style is along the lines of girlish sophistication, something about Proenza Schouler PS1’s (Barney’s, $1,595) practical, utilitarian aesthetic draws me in. Since it’s debut, I’ve been head over heels for the bag. Perhaps it was a tiring of the same leather satchel or frame bag seen season after season or an influence of the androgynous-meets-blase-“it”-girls that caused such attraction to the bag. Or a combination of both reasons, rather. Nonetheless, throwing all rationalization on why I love the PS1 aside, this bag truly is perfect.

Even in the most unbiased perspective, the PS1’s practicality seems to appeal to a greater majority of the bag ladies, myself included. Its perfect size for holding everything from essentials to books makes the PS1 the most fabulous book bag too (save the not-so-fabulous price). With a sturdy top handle that allows the bag to be carried either hooked on the arm or held like a traditional briefcase as well as straps that convert it into a shoulder/messenger/crossbody bag, there are already multiple ways to wear it with any ensemble. I find myself inspired by how Harper Bazaar’s accessories editor, David Thielebule: remove the strap and carry it as if it were a ridiculously oversized clutch. Which is completely ingenious, I think.

I will shamelessly admit that I’ve fallen for the suede PS1 in sand; the slightly off-white, creamy gray shade is the perfect blend of rugged sophistication. I only imagine of how lovely it would look, standing out boldly against the blues of denim as I lug it around. My outfit revelation avec the PS1? A perfect lazy day look walking from campus to campus, PS1 draped nonchalantly on one shoulder. A bit inspired by Erin Wasson, I suppose. Sadly, the closest I’ve ever come to seeing the bag was a ten second encounter at Barney’s, where I rushed myself away as I knew I would either (a) ogle with my mouth agape (b) pine away, knowing I can never hold it lest it be at Barney’s under the watchful eye of Barney’s sales associates.

ps11

A fitted blazer, unbuttoned and sleeves pushed up. Wrinkly is okay. Worn over a loose, slightly sheer Alexander Wang Pocket tank that has been tucked into a pair of denim shorts. Feet sipped into fringed boots from Baker’s. The only accessory? An Elizabeth & James ring. Voila.

ps1-sand

I guess that would be the definition of unrequited love, then.

xoxo,

La C.

P.S.: Thank you, Luphia, for the “Your Blog is Fabulous” award! =] And much thanks to the fabulous Janetteria for the “Unique & Chic” Award!

I know what its like to fall in love with a great bag(and great shoes, dresses, etc) that you just can’t buy. But then of course, I have regrets that I wish I did buy…….

I have a PS3! And I wish I had more time to play on it. Sigh. It certainly costs less than the ps1, even if you added the cost of 20 games. I must admit, the ps1 in a non-dark colour doesn’t do it for me. I much prefer the black version. A chocolate brown would work for me to.

But I agree with the affection you have for it. I love that slouchy look, yet so put-together but those utilitarian straps across it. It looks wonderfully functional, terribly spacious and something I certainly wouldn’t mind having.

    But after I get my Nightingale/Vivienne Westwood Ebury/Marni Balloon….*dreams*

    Haha. :p

Your description of anything is amazing. I’m pretty darn sure that even if you were writing about crap *excuse my french* I would be convinced to buy it.

    That outfit? PERFECT.

*laughs* It’s funny how one abbreviation can mean such completely different things (though I definitely prefer your definition!). This must be the closest thing I’ve come to a perfect bag in a long time… but I this is probably as close as I’ll get, since the price is waaay above my budget these days. I do wish someone would come up with a bag with 10-20 different compartments inside, so I wouldn’t have to grope around for those tiny things like my wallet or phone, and my books wouldn’t get scrunchy from being squeezed against my water bottle. Do you know if such a thing exists, darling? (since I’ve started to believe that you actually do know pretty much everything fashionable)

I can relate to the “pining away”. That happened to me at a shop in Toulon, Fr. over a red bra. It was completely out of my league at the time (who could believe that a bra could be so expensive?), and so I had to drive away and leave it behind. But, my god, I still think about that bra to this day. My advise to you is: do what you must to get the bag (hock jewelry, sell your car, whatever), you’ll be glad you did in the long run. xo
