Imagine my surprise when an invitation to the Revolve Los Angeles launch party, hosted by Bella Hadid, landed in my inbox.
Revolve. Los Angeles. Miss Hadid herself! How very L.A., and perhaps the pinnacle of L.A. things I’ve been around yet.
What does one wear to something like this? I love a good going-out look as much as the next woman (something I found I can actually enjoy in my thirties; whereas in my twenties, I always felt a little too vulnerable—like prey to straight men). But for events like this where I’m specifically invited as press, I feel compelled to wear a simpler, often monochromatic, look. I’m not talent, and I don’t want (or need) to be perceived in any capacity. And however self-imposed this implicit dress code may be, it’s as much my professional uniform of choice as it is a security blanket. I take comfort in blending into the background, particularly because I attend these affairs solo. Slipping in and tiptoeing out sans disruption is crucial.
And yet—a show of skin or something flashier seemed necessary for a Revolve event. I debated bringing out a Jean Paul Gaultier mesh set, but at the final minute, settled on this all-black, corset-and-trousers combination. I chose the road most traveled and did not regret it.
A few observations from my Notes app, made possible because I was alone and essentially undercover, given the ensemble (and of course):
- Even the influencers were dressed more subtly than I expected—perhaps because the debut Revolve Los Angeles collection centered around a neutral, predominantly black and white color palette, or the promise of celebrity appearances inspired nonchalance
- Tailored elements and sheer tights were abundant—love!
- I notice this time and time again: so many of the most-loved influencers are even more beautiful IRL
- Bella Hadid is even more stunning in person (truly, she was maybe two feet away from me at one point)
- Bronzer is back in full swing! Ariel‘s sun-kissed and contoured look on Hadid was gorgeous; I left inspired to apply my Fara Homidi Essential Bronzer with more conviction
- Espresso martinis remain unmatched in popular when it comes to drinks en vogue—it’s like a cigarette in the hand, a chic accessory and distraction
- As I was drying my hands outside the washroom, Tyrell Hampton started an impromptu shoot with Shay Mitchell—a behind-the-scenes moment I felt privileged to witness, even if it was for all of a minute before I scurried out. Hampton is quick and photographs with incredible confidence: the combination of his decisiveness and utter belief that every shot is the shot gives his subject even more fearlessness in front of the camera. It’s palpable, that energy—and that synergy translates into his signature, sexy edge.
- Very few attendees were dressed in actual pieces from the collection (an incredibly smart decision)—because it will no doubt make people covet the line more. This gown was my personal favorite before the evening, but to my surprise, the Mika mini dress ended up being the number that caught my eye the most. It’s simple, but the silhouette and proportions are well done—it’s sweet, sexy, memorable. Three markers of a great party dress.
- I wish people danced more. Living Room certainly has the space for it.
