The Inner Five-Year-Old

28 July 2009 • Kimberly • Leave a Comment

I like to think that I act maturely for my age. Pretentious of me, perhaps, but if nearly every person I’ve encountered in my mere seventeen years of existence has had preconceptions that I was at least two years senior my actual age (since I was little, for better or for worse), I do think I am somewhat entitled to assume so.

Since I was four, my mother would chuckle at my attempts to mimic the likes of successful, career-driven women (giving presentations on what color crayon was best, how-to’s, etc. to an invisible audience) in the midst more age-appropriate antics and my obsession with creating ensembles and modeling for my mother down the wooden hallway I called my makeshift catwalk. She often called me a twenty-year old woman trapped in a child’s body, inhibited only by my actual age and size.

But on occasion the five year old girl within makes cameo appearances. And those who are lucky – or unlucky – enough to witness an event as rare as catching a glimpse of a shooting star can vouch that it is quite the interesting experience. If you do wish to participate in a viewing of such revealing of my inner child, mark your calendars! It happens on two occasions, and two occasions only, mes chéris: (1) during the holiday season, from the month of December to New Year’s, particularly around Christmastime, and (2) when I get packages/mail/letters via the trusty postal service we all know and love.

Now let us examine the second phenomenon, in which it is subdivided into two categories. Case one would be classified as a situation in which I had previous knowledge of the package(s) and its expected arrival date. A.k.a. I had swiped darling daddy’s credit card and bought a little something for myself. In this situation, I would obsessively track the package for its safe delivery (thank God for the UPS tracking technology). Case no. 2 is far more exciting; these are the packages/letters that catch me by surprise, making my day far more exciting!

So imagine my childish antics in opening coming home from a long day of interning and bland court-related jibberish to find not one, but three packages awaiting my eager fingers to tear open. Three lovely packages! Where the first was an example of case one, and the latter two were classified under case two. Do excuse the quality of the pictures, my camera is quite shabby.

It amuses me that these three items should be black. Suitable, I think!

three packages on a monday 006

This, my pretties, is my petit cadeau from the talented and oh-so-incroyable La Flore et La Faune for winning the Summer Love Contest! I simply cannot express how much I adore what Sylvain calls a “petite cadeau” – I love little books (French ones, in particular) chock full of pictorial goodness and quotes! Merci; je t’aime! This truly is an incredible prize to win!

three packages on a monday 024

Again, kindly ignore the awkward lighting (apparently wooden hangers leave yellow-ish reflections on the wall?). But I present to you my American Apparel bodysuit! As of late I’ve been coveting the edgier, if not saucier, looks nearly ubiquitous in the blogosphere. And I’ve been in dire need of a one-piece bather (for the beach only), as I sometimes am not in the mood to flaunt and prance about in an teensy ruffled bikini after a good meal. The versatility is quite amazing – a great leotard for dance, for regular wear, for the beach – which makes the price tag quite amazing!

I confess. This leotard is my first purchase from American Apparel, one that has me officially in love with AA. Of course I coveted the bodycon skirts and notoriously sexy u-back dresses, but my shopping ban has restricted me from actually buying them. I have heard of the amazing quality and fit of their pieces that I now can vouch for. I must say I was very much impressed with the quick shipping, for one. And the quality of the piece is ah-ma-zing. It truly fits like a charm, a godsend I must say! Most body conscious pieces don’t fit as body conscious as I would like; they either fit the bust and hips well but loose at the waist, or vice versa. I have this love-hate relationship with my hourglass shape. Well, mostly love, I must admit, only a bit of hatin’ when it comes to finding the right pieces that fit.

Oh, and this piece is sexxxx-ayy. Sexy enough for multiple “x‘s”.

This, my darlings, would be my new  f a v o r i t e  piece, sent to me courtesy of the Canadian designer, Anastasia Lomonova, whom I wrote about for Dujour a while back. She is unbelievably sweet – so thank you Anastasia! Sadly my photography skills (I blame the camera) do the sweater dress no justice whatsoever. It is a stunning scoopneck, batwing sleeved dress – a lovely brick pattern with gold speckles that is a bit sheer: a combination of my favorite characteristics in apparel. I simply cannot wait for the colder weather so I can prance about in its loveliness and take a proper photo of it then for you to ooh and ahh at; another sexy piece to behold, one I love wearing it off the shoulder with a pair of platform heels.

I swoon, I die. (I had to, sorry. Okay not really.)

bisous,

La C.

Hahahahahahaha I love how you approach thins. Makes packages much more fun than they are!! You’re quite the witty girl, darling!

And THAT BOOKK LOOKS AMAZING! I would love to see those quotes!! and those photos!

That AA leotard is the last thing I would expect to see on this blog, but you’re right, it’s HOT! I’m just curious, what are your measurements? Hehe. Please show an outfit post? I’d love to see how you work it!

And that Lomonova sweatdress looks AMAZING like TO DIE FOR! And I’d also like to see “a proper photo” of you wearing it! 😉

Surprise packages from friends always make me cry. I get all emotional at the thought of anyone taking the time to actually send me anything at all, and so start the waterworks. Your packages are all lovely, and you are well loved as you should be.
I think it’s really cool that you’ve been “driven” ever since you were little. You must have a naturally sharp mind.

Lovely! The items and how you took three items and turned them into nine (yes, I admit I counted) paragraphs.
I have to agree with thebaglady: you just made receiving mail a lot more fun.

Next can we see you in the clothes? Please, pretty please?

Ahh La.C you continually make my day with your witty, wonderful writing! Hurray for mail, too! I actually got bottle of wine today from my parents to congratulate me on my new apt. in Manhattan. However, I feel I may end up using the wine to drown my rent sorrows more than anything else!
    Cheers!

I definitely act giddy when a package or letter arrives in the mail that I’ve been looking forward to as well. I tell myself that sometimes it’s the simple in things in life that make me most happy. 🙂 Great first purchase from AA! If that’s your first purchase, you’ll be buying more now that you understand the quality. That black dress you received is very pretty. It would look great with leggings and a pair of killer heels as well!
