Yves Saint Laurent

30 March 2009 • Kimberly • Leave a Comment

The Yves Saint Laurent Muse (YSL.com, $1,395). A classic without a doubt, its soft, bowler tophandle silhouette holding the ability to appeal to nearly every woman who comes across its loveliness. Such skill must have been bestowed upon it by some sort of holy deity; it is an ability that makes every man quite jealous that a woman would choose the Muse over himself. Poor men.

The patent version, in all it’s pristine, pre-packaged, untouched condition. I love it slightly frumpled and worn.

But what defines a classic bag? Surely a main characteristic of any such bag must possess the ability to last a few decades, at least. And appealing to women universally goes without saying, of course. Yet even bags that own these attributes are subject to scrutinization and controversy as to whether or not the label of “classic” is legitimate; the opposition tends to point out a fairly reasonable argument: are the fashion editors who are well linked to designers given the voice to generalize the opinion of all women on handbag choices?

Which is why we, as individual women, should define classic for ourselves.

clas⋅sic (adj.): Pertaining to women’s handbags… (a) A handbag large enough to hold essentials. Oversized is always preferable. (b) A bag of impeccable quality in regards to material (leather is preferred), stitching, hardware, etc. A classic bag must be able to hold through the years; if it cannot last, it is not classic. (c) Practicality is considered; will it match a majority of my outfits? Check. Can I (on the off chance I have gone on vacation and only brought ONE bag) and will I be more than happy to use this bag consecutively for a week without complaint? Check. (d) A bag that can be seen on myself ten years later.

And the YSL Muse seems to have fit the definition quite perfectly. The patent Muse, that is. And edgier, fresh-er take on the original leather version. The perfect amount of detail that adds dimension to not just the bag, but to any outfit paired with it – it is quite amazing how a change in material alters the presentation of something.

I am determined to buy the patent Muse. I never thought I would meet the day in which I would find a bag more covetable than the Miu Miu Vitello Lux I dedicated my first official post to. But today is indeed that day.

must-have-ysl-tribute-sandalThe YSL Tribute Sandals. The patent Muse’s soul mate, or sole mate, shall I say. Five inches of complete perfection, platform and all. The shoes of my dream. The heel, the height, the structure somehow have made this sandal utterly impeccable. I would die to own these.

I’ve dreamt of owning them since I saw the neon yellow version on Jak & Jil. And since then, I’ve had multiple dream sequences of me dashing to some show, in Paris, during fashion week.

jj-ysl-tribute-sandals

My love for them (and YSL as a whole) is irrevocable.

Bisous,

La C.

The Muse bag is truly beautiful, but it hasn´t won me over, my dreambag is a Chloé Edith…sigh!
But the Tribute heels, OMG! I agree with you, I would die to own these!

Ooh, the Muse is gorgeous, but I actually prefer the Miu Miu (would be more than happy with either though, they’re both 2D4 🙂 The Muse is ‘classier’, whereas the Miu Miu is more ‘relaxed’).

My current ‘wish-list’ bag is the Chanel 2.55 reissue, although that most likely will never be mine…If only I knew how to save…and if only the prices wouldn’t keep increasing every few months, it’s becoming unattainable 🙁

Those shoes are GORGEOUS, the way the straps just curve around your feet, the sexy stiletto heel, and that perfectly prim ankle strap *drools*. I’m not loving the Muse as much though, I’m not a huge fan of those slightly bowler bag styles.

I’ve never been a “bag lady” but I can agree that the YSL Muse is a classic and I would love that to be my handbag, even if it was my only one. The shoes on the other hand…I have admitted to a shoe fetish, and the Tributes are no exception. I love the Tribute Too as well, with the bright blue sole. I’d gladly take them in any color.

I guess for now I’m just stuck with wishful thinking 😉

They should definitely make an affordable line and sell it in Target like other major designers have… They’d make so much more money!! Especially in this recession.. And then we could all probably own a little piece of YSL 🙂

I tell you, when I first put a Muse on my arm and looked at myself in the mirror, I realised then the power of a well-shaped, well-made bag. There was something about it that sprung out of its very simple shape. Rachel and I are die-hard lovers of the Muse: in almost all leathers, colours and sizes. It’s even the name of our favourite band! (Muse rocks!)

And I love that Jak&Jil photo of the yellow tributes. I personally love the blue ones. So yummy and I remember trying the black ones on in a store and suddenly feeling like Victoria Beckham for that split second. I don’t know why. 🙂

Long live the Muse (and may we all somehow be blessed with one at some point in the future!)

Omg. Shopping trips? Oggling at beautiful shop windows? Planning our trip to Paris? How about clubbing in Tokyo? The fun we would have together is pretty much immeasurable. One day, La C, we might meet. We’ll never know 🙂

And you know, I just noticed what a subtle beauty there is in the little “twist” or mini-braid almost of the Tribute’s strap which you can see at the side of the shoe. It’s things like that which keep a shoe like the Tribute one up above the ordinary strappy heeled sandal.

So much love I have for this post 🙂
